Potable Water Plumbing

Those of you who have water tanks, pumps & hot water heaters, what kind of tubing is your boat plumbed with? Mine has that old PVC(?) gray tubing with compression ends and threaded connection pieces. Well they don't sell that stuff anymore and I think I actually heard/read that it was actually for health reasons but don't quote me on that. Anyway, it is failing here and there on me bote and I'd like to re-plumb it all since I am in the process of replacing the water heater. I am looking at that vinyl tubing that is clear but has some kind of filament woven into it. Has anyone else used it and if so, can compression fittings be used with it or am I going to be using barbed ends with hose clamps all over the boat? Thanks! Paul West '80 Cal 39 MK III

Paul, We just changed everything over to nylon tubing and push to connect fittings. I've got blue for cold, red for hot, and I am going to use green for salt water when I get to that point. The fittings and tubing are good to 150 degrees and I use elbows and tees to make it easier to go around stuff. It's easy to assemble and I haven't seen any leaks in over a year. hi, that old stuff may have been the "gray whale" brand. If you are doing it all over, I think it's being done with "pex" style. I saw a beautiful job from a year ago, done by abyc guy, with red for hot, blue for cold. you want to use goodyear marinegrade rubber hose coming from engine to heater. for at least two feet, (colors available in red and black) because it absorbs the vibrations not ok with pex. We are going that way. Don't forget the pencil anode (magnesium) replacement in the place on the water heater where you find a nylon type faucet when new. Usually special request from WM, as most of the employees don't know what that is, though manufacturer recommends it. Replace annually or as needed. If neglected, the screw in head may rust in place.
