T2 being scrapped
mo… [at] aol.com2014-09-14 02:43 UTC
this is an odd question but, i was wondering if anyone knows where there is a T2 being scrapped. i would love to get a hold of the raised coach roof part of one.

Yes that little cabin makes a great enclosure for a 3lb canon, and you could mount it on a swivel. Oh, I guess I'm a pirate at heart. Bucaneer days at Puma Island are right around the corner.

actually, i have a 1971 c27 pop top and i am tired of having to be bent over. i am planning on building a doghouse coach roof, like the t2 has and glassing it on. but, if i can find one cut off of a salvaged t2 that might save me considerable work.

I would also like to try adding a doghouse to my pop top. It would be great if you could send some pictures of the final product. Thanks

Hey Motorcyclejack,
I started on the doghouse for my cal 25 pop top. I made a female mold on deck out of MDF, removed it and glassed into it. I have posted the pics on the group site. Hope this helps,Ben.

so, it looks as if you aren't making it a cored construction. how thick is the fiberglass and is it structurally stiff and strong? thanks

yah no core. I was going to add some plywood but it is quite stiff and after the rails for the hatch and handrails I think it will be fine, i.e. strong enough to sit or walk on (not that I plan to).The layup was a skin coat with 1oz mat, then mat (1.5oz from now on) cloth (8oz) mat. Then mat, cloth (18oz) mat, cloth, mat. The corners/edges ended up getting almost double that as I would do one edge including the corner, then the roof and go over the corner again. It weighs 65lbs total with the hatch. I weighed the pop top and it was 42lbs, so not too much heavier but I still have the windows and hardware to install.

Re: T2 being scrapped
mo… [at] aol.com2015-05-16 22:20 UTC
thanks for the info. very helpful. i am thinking cored construction might be a little lighter than solid because wood is lighter than frp and you don't need as much frp if you do cored. of course, just a fiberglass layup with no wood might be easier to do and you wouldn't have to worry about delamination.
things to consider....
for windows, i am looking for opening portlights. i'd like to keep te great airflow it has with the top popped.
by the way, i think my pop top is a bit heavier than yours. 42 pounds isn't very much to lift and i know mine feels quite heavy when you lift it. it's going to take two of s to remove it from the boat.
