It is probably the damper plate. That is the plate that helps to absorb some of the shock from the deflection of you going in and out of gear. Not a big fix but a lot of work.

The Atomic 4 does not have a "damper or flex plate" as the trans is driven from splines in the crankshaft and is integral with the engine. Most marine engines have the flywheel at the aft end of the engine and the damper plate is bolted to the flywheel. It has springs to absorb shock as you shift. The inner spline on the damper plate accepts the input shaft of the typical transmission. The flywheel on the A4 is at the front end of the engine. This is why you should always throttle down to idle speed for a few seconds before shifting and why you must hold the shift lever in reverse gear.
