Howdy -
Is anyone familiar off the top of their heads with any decent sailing rentals around the Sheboygan WI area? I found one spot that rents a 18" for $200 a day (the US Sailing Center) I would be a lot more willing if that was a 24" or bigger for that price, but there it is.
Coming out from the SF Bay area for a vacation & would like to sail if I get the chance & it is reasonable. Not looking for a fancy boat, just one that is in working order and safe for my kids.
Just asking.

I've been seeing ads for "Wisconsin's Schooner Coast" in our newspaper.
It's the area a bit north of Sheboygan. Here's their web site, from
which you may be able to find info or make contacts:
I've been to the "schooner coast" area frequently in, appropriately
enough, our local schooner--the ports of Sturgeon Bay, Kewaunee, Two
Rivers, Manitowoc. For my tastes, it's a very cool region of friendly
old midwestern industrial towns adapting to a new economy. Manitowoc
has the nice Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
If you were to visit and get bored with sailing, you could hop on the
carferry /Badger/ at Manitowoc and sail across to Michigan. /Badger/ is
a coal-fired steamer with Skinner Unaflow engines, a genuine museum
piece that's still in action. The carferries were a 19th century
project to carry railroad cars across Lake Michigan, avoiding congestion
at Chicago. They operated on a year-round basis, breaking ice all
winter. Because of ice and storms with big seas, it was a heroic form
of seamanship. /Badger/ is the last of them, launched in 1953 in
Sturgeon Bay. She's slightly modified to carry automobiles and trucks
only now. The ferries carried automobiles as additional cargo since the
early 20th century. My father proposed to my mother while crossing Lake
Michigan on one of the carferries.
Sturgeon Bay is the home of the famous Palmer Johnson yard. They build
mostly super-megayachts (powerboats) for the ultra-rich now:
They've always been good about giving us dock space for the schooner
when we've been there.
Just south of Sheboygan is the pretty town of Port Washington, home of
/Sailing/ magazine, one of my favorites. Here's Port Washington:

superb--he gets it exactly right about sailing subjects all the time.

If you're having no luck with boat rental, contact Mr. Schanen and ask
him. He knows all the sailors and sailing businesses in that area.

Wow, $200 a day for an 18'-er? I assume that includes captain, crew, three full dinners with choice of entre and a midnight buffet, plus several floor shows, but does it include cocktails too? Maybe I need to tow my Cal 24' up there for the summer and rent it out?

as the former owners of 74 cal 29 Noah's Kid, (now cal 36 owners), we think you have the other best looking cal 29 with original, intact, interior that we've seen. jensen speakers (cool). It would show well at the upcoming Plastic Classic event at Bayview Boat Club. what are you going to replace it with? it was hard parting with ours, and we still miss it. helen

Thanks, Helen. Yes, she's a solid boat - no bad habits. Haven't decided on the replacement yet - have looked at a late 80's Catalina 36 and an older Sabre 34.

What's the thing about getting a bigger boat? Last weekend I raced against Dennis Conner aboard a Kettenberg 40 (can you believe, it was this owner's FIRST BOAT?) with one professional crew-Ollie McCann- as Chute organizer and general galley slave whipper (frustrating for him, alas, I think) and I kept thinking, my Cal 24 is way more fun to sail on than this big girl. The waves are too far away from me!
I'm also thinking, you're thinking, well, didja guys beat him? Funny you should ask. It was an inverted start and he passed us far to the windward on the second leg going like a bat out of hell, while our coach was trying to get the driver's eyes off the compass and onto the tell tales.
It was loads of fun anyway, and I learned a few things, got to fly a really big kite on two reaches.
And the wooden boats were gorgeous, especially the
ten meter sloop "Sally" and the folks competing were the best, all friendly and down to earth.
That's our skipper and club commodore, Steve, presenting the perpetual trophy to Dennis.
