Brummel hooks?
ccampbell2015-06-24 13:48 UTC
Listmates:
My Cal 20 had her first sail under partial rig last week. Last night I
rowed out and replaced the turnbuckle that had jumped ship and the lower
terminal of another that had been bent. The parts had arrived in the
day's mail. I also moved the new spinnaker halyard so it didn't foul
the jib halyard as it did last week. Why is it that we never discover
such things until we are under sail?
And that reminded me that the old halyard terminated in a small aluminum
Brummel hook. Problem is, I don't have the original spinnaker with the
other half of the Brummel hook on it. The catalogs don't exactly
feature a wide range of Brummel hooks these days. Does anybody have a
small one in the hardware stash that you'd be willing to part with?
And if not, what's the best recommendation for a small connecting device
suitable for a small spinnaker on the Cal 20?

Hi Chris , I have a pair for spinnaker left over from my days sailing Fireballs.
They are probably about 3/8 in wide so should fit in a standard envelope. If I drop them in the mail tomorrow you might have them for the weekend.

Hello Chris,
When I first read "brummel hook", I thought you were making a joke; something like a canooter valve, muffler bearing, blinker fluid, etc....
Anyway, I googled it up. Lo and behold, they exist. I have never used one, but I can see where it could be used. Since there is no positive locking mechanism, I would shy away myself. While they are expensive, we went for Tylaska shackles for our spinnaker sheets and halyards. You will appreciate the design and reliability of a Tylaska.
Losing your spinnaker when the shackle self-opens really stinks. And, as you said, you only discover this when you are under sail.

Wow! I'm at 116 Monroe St., Traverse City, MI 49684. For my first few
outings under the "new" used spinnaker I tied it on--not the best practice.

They're positive enough for most purposes, since you have to line up the
openings just right to take them apart. You could probably train a
chimpanzee or parrot to do it, but it won't happen often by chance.

It's probably overkill on a Cal 20!

Hi Chris,
I mailed you the one brummel hook I could find when I got back from sailing last night. Sorry I could only find one in my spare hardware box. I will try to look on my old spinnakers in the attic for more.

I've got 1/2 of a Brummel hook already and if the dimensions agree, the
second half will put me in business.
The big question in my mind was "when do we see horsechestnut nuts?" I
could not remember if it was spring or fall. Maybe I need to find a
source in the southern hemisphere so they are available right now, when
the spiders are annoying me.

Your envelope arrived--but the Brummel hook had jumped ship. I suspect
that the post office's sorting machines had squeezed it out of the
envelope. There was a small tear along one edge. I was all excited
about having a proper spinnaker halyard but then I felt the envelope and
wondered why it was so light and flat.
So thank you for making the effort, and keep looking for another one!
Or I could just buy another form of shackle, and then I'll have an extra
1/2 Brummel hook to contribute to somebody else.

Hi Chris, sorry to hear the hook was lost , I was hoping it could be used . I had placed it between 2 index cards stapled around the perimeter and placed in envelope. I should have used a padded mailer. I will keep looking for its twin. Someone will find it on the floor and it will confuse the heck out of them wondering what it is and what machine it fell out of.
I will try to find more brummel hooks from some of my friends.
good luck ,

Chris,
Yes!!! Those shackles rock. We use them on Magic with 1/4" line as light air spinnaker shackles. We got caught with some heavier air during a race and they held fast. I think they are rated for ~700 lbs.

Looks good. I can't even remember what I've got on my sheets--maybe
knots. Will have to look tonight if it's warm enough for sailing.
On those, it looks like you use a stopper knot to secure them?

I notice the attachment looks a bit odd with the hole in the bottom and
some detail in the opening. How do you attach to these things?
Are they still made? I didn't see anything on the Lewmar web site.

Hi, Allen. This undersize photo shows the intended attachment. It is just a built-up knot. For the skinny line, I use a bowline around the large hole where the knot is in the photo. Works fine for my purposes. From searches, this looks like a UK innovation.

Hi, All. Again, for search purposes, these parts are apparently called “nab shackles”.

Speaking of shackles, does anyone besides me use Dyneema loop and knot shackles? I've been using one of them for foresail sheets with 1000% success for the last three years and would never dream of going back to any other sort of jib sheet attachment, since they are lighter than the sheet itself and hook up quickly, and never snag on shrouds.Jerry of Shpritz, the venerable Cal 24 Mk-1, maximum fun Cal.PS, I also use Dyneema-Amsteel in place of steel cable on my halyards. No more meat-hooks, and minimum windage.

Charlie,I'm glad you asked. Getting dirty looks from the roving riggers at the yacht clubs forewarned me. Then there was the rumor of "creep" I kept hearing. So rest assured, I took the precaution of dipping all my hi-tech rigging in a vat of boiling 100% natural, organic certified La Brea Tar and Linseed Oil, then letting it dry out in the cool shade of a North Coast old growth Redwood forest for two whole months before I added it to my existing inventory of traditional Poly Esters, Stainless Cables, and pre-flowered hemp rigging.Cheerz!Jerry

My boat is relatively classic by some standards being an L-36 and there is
Dyneema all over it. The stuff is great. Just don't put it around a winch
or cleat.

I might add a note on Soft Shackles. My favorite is one I developed and
call a better soft shackle. I highly recommend it. Much easier to use
than the ones you usually see.
