I replaced my spruce spreaders on my cal 29 w aluminum ones. A company
called JSI in fl made mine.
I thought they were very reasonable in price and I really liked the product.
Love not having to worry about them.

I had a lower spreader break on my 36. It was very rotten spruce and I replaced with straight, vertical grain Douglas fir because it was what I could get. A friend of mine machined new aluminum plates for the mast end and the tip out of aircraft grade plate. I primed and painted white because that should give the best all around protection. I've only done the lowers but have 2 more for the uppers as soon as I can get around to it. The aluminum parts were very corroded as well. The spreaders were probably original from 1967. Mike

Mike, we have to make all 4 for our 36, did you make a template for them? Any chance we could get a set to make ours? We had to make a tip for a lower out of a chunk of aluminum, but we will have somebody make the correct tips when we make all four. Are they identical spreader shapes or are the top set slightly smaller? Those are beautiful, and I would finish them the same way..did that on our 29 years back and they are still nice. In case you havent installed them yet, remember I painted some silly snake with open jaws on each topside with green body, yellow stripes, a red mouth wide with white teeth around. The 29 is now in Santa Cruz and is the cleanest on the dock, excluding the birds that sit on lifelines. I would be happy to share the design with you, and we used some old easypoxy leftover paint.(probably still have some). Helen, Caliente, Redwood City.

My other boat had already had a spreader repair at the base, just
outside the stainless socket, when we bought her back in 1968. By about
5 years ago, the repair was failing. It involved a couple tongue
depressors (!!) and a few wraps of fiberglass and probably polyester
resin. The tongue depressors, which are likely birch, had turned into
dust. We will not discuss the reasoning that went into that repair. I
revised the repair using a 1" or so mortise-and-tenon joint with epoxy
glue and a piece of new spruce (no fiberglass). The forces on the
spreader are mostly in compression and the new repair seems to be
completely adequate. My spreader was not nearly as bad as Mike's rotted
one.
The spreaders were varnished but it was always difficult to keep the
top-side varnish intact. I followed advice probably from this list and
painted the top only white. That reflects light, protects better
against UV, and cannot be seen from below. The bottoms are varnished
and look pretty.

I still have the upper spreaders which I patterned after the broken one. I can measure and sketch and send you the data. I don't know about tye uppers yet for sure. I haven't been ip there yet to verify. They look identical to the lowers from my vantage point in the bosun's chair. If I find something else then I'll adjust. They're at least very close.
I'll make a note to get started on it this weekend

And now that I think about it, I have the second lower spreader that I took down that was still intact and pretty solid. I can get original measurements from it or even better, ship the old spreader so you have an original to pattern from. I'll look this weekend and if I still have it I'll ship it to you. Mike
