Re: Cal 39 Opening Ports

I did this during the winter of 2013-2014. Very satisfied with them. The
plastic originals were leaking and had to be removed - many broke in the
process - and I couldn't see doing all that removal work and simply
putting back new plastic.
The installation is straightforward, assuming you are reasonably handy,
have the right tools and some familiarity with fiberglass work and
sealants. But, it is time consuming and the install (not the prep) is
definitely a two person job. I worked together with someone at the yard
where my boat spent the winter. We used 3M 4000, not the butyl so I can't
comment on that. Very important to get all of the old silicone sealant off
and you will have to cut new openings, as the Newfound product is close,
but it is a different opening. You will also need the trim pieces for the
interior because the cabin thickness is not sufficient.
It's not an inexpensive project, but it is a big improvement in both form
and function. I almost never opened the old ports - these are a snap to
open and close and they give the boat a totally different and much improved
look.

Ports for Cal 35 Cruise?
Peter Ford2015-07-14 05:22 UTC
Hi,
Has anyone replaced their ports (3 front, 3 each side, one sliding rear) on their Cal 35 Cruise? Is there a recommended supplier for these?
My captain wants me to look for opening Portlights to replace at least a couple of the fixed Ports? Any advice on this front? I am familiar with New Found Metals that has been noted in the Cal 39 Portlight discussions.
regards, peter

Mine are custom fixed offshore ports. Powder coated aluminum frames and 1/2 inch polycarbonate.
For seaworthy opening frames, you'd probably want to check out Diamond Sea-Glaze or maybe Manship. Wont be cheap but they will be really nice compared to the stock windows which were not really suitable to leave protected waters with.
