More rudder talk please

Hello all, My Cal 31 is on the hard for scheduled bottom paint etc. nd what do you know........ the rudder has cracks in it. The yard sanded them to get a better look and it does not look good. They are horizontal which is strange to me. I am in the market for a new rudder. I have heard talk of Foss rudders but when I Google them, I get 2 companies. One in Florida and one in Cali. I am sorry if this topic has been covered recently but I would like to hear about dealings with either of these companies. Also: Any cost estimates? Thanks Chris Poulsbo, WA Cal31

Chris, the Foss in CA makes the older model rudders. I’ve bought two for CAL 25s, and have been pleased with the products. I paid about $900 for each one which included shipping (cross country). I am guessing you are in the $1200-1300 range. Do not know about ellipicals for your model boat. The CAL 25s do not allow them as a one design. Is you present rudder warped in any way? I reskinning might do it. For what it's worth, when I got my cal 29, the rudder sheathing was split. If the foam that was poured around the stainless post is still in tact(ie not loose and wiggly, then you may be dealing with a delamination of the skin from the foam. I sanded off all the old glass except near the top, and re-sheathed my rudder a couple of layers of heavy cloth and epoxy resin. Have not had any problem of indication of failure. that said, if you are doing distance sailing or out in rough weather a lot, a new rudder would probably be a small price to pay for the piece of mind. Chris, I recently purchased an elliptical rudder for our 2-27 from "The Foss Company" in California The Foss Company Makes Quality Sailboat Rudders and Dagger Boards that Can Be Shipped Anywhere in the World from Newport Beach, California. Price $1,100 plus S&H. It's installed, and so far it seems to provide a lighter helm (less weather helm) than the original. Speak with Don Proul at 949-646-0244. From what I remember, he only is there from Monday through Thursday. Other times, you will need to leave a message. | | | | | | | | | | | The Foss Company Makes Quality Sailboat Rudders an...The Foss Company Makes Quality Sailboat Rudders and Dagger Boards that Can Be Shipped Anywhere in the World from Newport Beach, California | | | | View on www.boatrudder.com | Preview by Yahoo | | | | | BTW, If anyone here is in need of a sturdy original 2-27 rudder, it's yours for the S&H. It weighs 52 lbs. The original spokes were replace with SS about six years ago. With some moderate effort, I am confident that it can be restored to pristine condition and will last for decades. Thank you Michael ! Just what I was looking for. How long did you have to wait for them to ship it? I don't imagine they have them "on the shelf". Also: any change to boat feel when motoring? My tiller really pulls to port when motoring. Wondering if the rudder change may help that too

Chris, Build time was about one week for the Cal 2-27 Rudder. Ship time was supposed to be five days. Pilot Freight delivered the rudder to Fort Lauderdale, then sent it to Atlanta, and then back to Miami. I finally received it about nine days late. I would not haul out until you receive the new rudder. The extra yard time was more expensive than FedEx overnight delivery. Good Luck! Chris, When I ordered a rudder Foss sent me an elliptical, and it's an improvement. The 29 and 31 rudders are very similar so better ask which one they make for your 31.
