Was there a difference in size? Mine is wider. I am worried it will stall.

Chris,When I ordered a rudder Foss sent me an elliptical, and it's an improvement. The 29 and 31 rudders are very similar so better ask which one they make for your 31.David Dobbs, Cal 29 411

Chris, the Foss in CA makes the older model rudders. I’ve bought two for CAL 25s, and have been pleased with the products. I paid about $900 for each one which included shipping (cross country). I am guessing you are in the $1200-1300 range. Do not know about ellipicals for your model boat. The CAL 25s do not allow them as a one design. Is you present rudder warped in any way? Randy,
I noticed no difference in the rudder thickness.
As for the aspect ratio (mean chord : length) of the two rudders, I made some quick drawing measurements and the math shows:
Elliptical: 1:3
Original: 1:3.35
The area of the elliptical rudder is ~ 16.5% greater than the original.
The above results are estimates only. I really don't know what that is telling me, other than there will be some performance differences. Reading up on this stuff seems to tell me that a higher aspect is preferred for reaching, elliptical rudders are better for downwind or motoring, and more surface area means more drag. I found nothing in the PHRF Schell Regression Formula that takes rudder metrics into account.
The reason I bought the elliptical rudder in the first place was because of the existing mold for it. There was no mold for the original.
