Yes, stuffing box. Thanks to everyone for pointing this out. Cutlass bearing needs replaced as well as stuffing box repacked.

We replaced the cutlass bearing (through the strut)by pulling the shaft and making a very careful cut (parallel to shaft) with narrow sawzall blade, it then peels up to shrink the circumference and pull it out. But maybe you can realign your shaft, repair the stuffing box as well at the same time. It could be misaligned and could chew it all up. Check for bent, scored shaft, or bent strut. We needed to redo strut in our case.(Noah's Kid 74 cal 29) Helen and Edward

Helen,
Where did you get your new strut? They’d told me mine is going bad.
Thanks in advance.

Terry,
I recall that the 2-27 and 29 have the same strut. We replaced our strut three years ago. We had it fabricated in SS by Frank & Jimmie's in Fort Lauderdale. Give them a call. They may have saved drawings. In my case, I think the strut was around $700, but I forget.

Terry,
When i hauled Nemesis at Citadel a couple of years ago they were able to weld up the electrolysis damage on my strut. Since then I have had a rudder zinc bolted directly to it, nd there have been no more issues.

Aluminum is the preferred "anode" in most circumstances.
We almost never install or recommend zinc as an anode.
If your strut is almost bad, then put a rudder anode on it made of aluminum
( THEY LOOK LOKE SAND DOLLARS) and monitor it.
You might also consider making sure that the bolts on it are bonded to the
rest of your system, which they most likely are not, which is why it is
possibly part of its turning pink and failing.

Echoing Fred. We also used sand dollar shape zinc on strut of 29, a bolt-together torpedo zinc on the one inch shaft. and our maxprop had its own zinc tailpiece. Sorry was away a few days. Looking for info and contact for strut. Helen Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android
