Mast Support Beam corroded - Hard or easy to fix?
Jordan de Geus2015-08-07 15:26 UTC
Hey guys!
I'm new to the group, and I'm looking at a 39' Cal MK II cruiser. A survey
has been done on it and came back saying that the mast support beam is
corroded and need replacing.
I'm curious to know if people have performed this before? They are asking
$24.5k for the boat, however they are reviewing all offers, especially
after this survey(which was done by them).
The boat is in fairly decent condition, iniside and out, and the asking
price if i can push them sub 20 I think would be a good deal.
Anyone have any input for me?
Thanks!

I have a 79 Cal 39 MK II and the mast is stepped on a large piece of fiberglass molded into the transverse supports for the hull. It appears to be solid fiberglass and looks original. I don't see how it could be corroded.
Are you sure it is not the mast step they are talking about?

The beam is what's under that piece of fiberglass.

Where are you? I just bought a boat similar.
You can get a pin camera from Amazon for less than $20 and scope the area. It is easiest to get at the forward end of it through the starboard chest of drawers. The aft side is harder to get at.
From what I have gathered in the site (search) the consensus is there is no metal (steel) beam in these mark II boats (from Caltopia meet). The mark I has a galvanized beam. I can't see any steel in mine. There is also no rust in the bilge, which I would suspect. I have also emailed at least one other person who has taken his mast out to redo the step (somewhat common issue). I do believe there are a series of fiberglass ribs in this area.
Anyway the steel beam connects to the bulkhead with tabs and though bolts. I have none of those either. Cal also started to change other boats around this time to AL be material as an improved beam material.
I was confident I could fix mine if necessary, but now I don't believe it is necessary, as I don't believe is has any metal in this area of the boat b

I have an '80 MK III and when I bought mine the base of the mast was corroded so I had about 1-1/2 inches cut off the bottom, had a delrin "foot" made for it and a 1/8" thick piece of steel cut for it to sit on as the fiberglass foot was full of holes and uneven. I filled the holes with West Systems 301 epoxy and leveled it out. As far as a steel beam, I've not seen it. It may be there but if so, it's encased in fiberglass. I have pics of all that I did that I can post once I get back home next week if anyone wants to see them.
