ineptitude multiplies.
All summer there has been a ca. 40 foot sailboat anchored off our
downtown park space seawall. It's unprotected from the north. It's a
nice looking boat with sail covers matching the hull, etc. It had
anchors out fore and aft, but does not seem to have had much activity.
Today the cold front moved in and the wind switched to the north and the
sailboat's bow anchor rode parted. It swung toward the seawall, stern
out toward the seas, held by the stern anchor. The bow was very close
to the seawall. After an hour or so somebody was aboard and a
powerboat, about a 35 footer, showed up. They did not have much luck
towing because the sailboat's keel had dug itself into the sand. They
didn't try heeling it over with a halyard.
Pretty soon the power boat was disabled too--shafts bent? Tow line
wrapped? It's anchored but looks like it's hitting the wall now. So
pretty soon it's likely that we'll have two boats breaking up.
Sad to see boats wrecked. My theory is that idiots should not be
allowed to own boats. I've been waiting all summer for the sailboat to
go ashore. They always do when anchored and left alone in a place like
that.
