update on ineptitude
ccampbell2015-09-29 18:38 UTC
Both boats have now sunk. Sailboat is heeled over but rig is still
intact. A big crane has arrived and is positioned near the
powerboat--maybe to yank it out before more environmental damage occurs.
Anybody need a nice aluminum mast? Get to Traverse City quickly before
the rig falls.

Yeah--it was a good looking boat with sails apparently in good order, at
least judging by the new-ish canvas work covering them. Very sad.

What a shame. The thing is, the owner, if he has insurance will probably
come out ahead over selling the boat or giving it away.
When people hang on to a boat too long, it becomes hard to let go.
Don't know the reasons behind this incident, but I have seen owners hang on
to boats till they are worthless then they are only left w walking away.

What a shame. There aren’t that many Cal 40s left.

This was not a worthless boat until yesterday. It's now sitting ashore
on a hauling trailer. The bow is chewed open, the keel ballast is
missing, and the rudder is half eaten. I can't see the side it was
lying on from here. The lower shrouds must have remained intact because
the mast is upright.
Turns out Bubba Jr. owned the boat, and Bubba Sr. came to the rescue in
his 1967 Chris Craft cruiser, a formerly handsome boat before it went on
the wall too. Father and son idiots, what an example. They were trying
to haul the sailboat off using a thin tow line secured to a mooring
cleat on the power boat. No towing bridle, no adequate hawser. If that
line had parted under tension, or worse, if the cleat had broken loose,
they would have been in big danger. However, since they did not use a
bridle, they could not maintain directional control on the power boat
and the waves pushed it into the rocks. The sailboat had dug itself a
little pit under the keel by then and wasn't going to move unless they
careened it, and that notion was beyond them.
One thing our secretary heard when she walked over to have a look-see at
lunchtime was that Bubba Jr. had bought the sailboat primarily to serve
as his "party boat," which is why it was anchored just off shore all
summer. It cannot have been cheap--the canvas work was all new looking
and the boat was clean and good looking so the previous owner must have
attended to things.

No, misunderstanding--this was a 40 foot (+/-) sailboat, but not a Cal.
Not sure what. Thank goodness. The death penalty would have applied to
that kind of stupidity.

Fw: [Cal_Boats] update on ineptitude
Gerald Sobel2015-09-30 19:52 UTC
These things are going to happen. It's too bad the owners didn't call a towing service or the Coast Guard when things started going south, but there's not much to be done now, and I doubt either boats are going to be worth the cost of the repairs unless they have beau coup expendable $$$. The same thing happened to a friend's Cal 24 Mk 1. He spent three years fixing it up, and it was in better shape than my Cal 24 to begin with. Another friend bought it, lived on it with a girlfriend and cruised with her and their Dalmatian "Pixel". The couple fought a lot, broke up, the second friend got into a crack addiction, and the Sheriffs towed it away and impounded it. Since the County of LA are puppets of the developers, that was the end of the boat, it was gleefully broken up. (When the Sheriffs auction the boat, they demand repayment of impound slip fees and towing, which is exorbitant in comparison to the market value of the boat, guaranteeing it will be demolished, and freeing up more parking for illegal condos to be built on your Federally Financed "World's Largest Small Craft Recreational -my foot-public park and harbor") When the first friend, who'd moved to Sacramento, heard about what had happened to his lovely, fully restored classic boat, he was absolutely heart broken, and furious.

No, no, this was not "going to happen" unless the boat's owner was
completely negligent, which he was. You do not leave a large vessel
anchored in an exposed location with inadequate equipment and without
checking it regularly. I was waiting all summer for this to happen. It
was inevitable only because the owner was such a fool.
The sailboat was being remodeled with a chain say to fit on the
trailer. The rest of the keel was cut off, rudder too.

Where are the pics and video of all this? You know the rule: Pics, or it never happened. 😎

I did not walk across the street to gawk. It's just too sad to see a
nice boat break up because it was owned by an idiot. I favor the death
penalty for people who abuse kids or kick dogs or neglect their boats.

Has anyone figured out the make/model of the sailboat?

Since I have a little "deferred maintenance" on my boat, I may not be 100% behind you on the Death Penalty for neglect, but I think it's perfectly acceptable to mercilessly excoriate them in a public forum for weeks (maybe even years) over something like this.
Need that video of them trying to save their boats (set to the Benny Hill music of course) for Youtube. If you're going to display monumental incompetence, I think you should have a worldwide audience. I mean that's what Al created the Internet for isn't it..?
