Harbor Occupancy was End of season - David Dobbs

Dave, It seems the harbor occupancy rate is steadily declining. There are several Jackson Park boats on Craigslist and YachtWorld, other boats just don’t come back. I don’t believe they are at 31st street harbor either. I drove up Lakeshore Drive in mid-July and Monroe Harbor appeared to be about half-full. The city has been offering “incentives” to lure boats to 31st street since it opened but this year they waived my non-resident fee on my mooring – that was a surprise ! Is just the Chicago harbor system or is the boating population shrinking ? Unstepped the mast today, nice and warm, sunny, but stiff SW winds, 25+, gusts. That's okay, means the water is flat in our harbor. There were 3 ahead of me, and the last one was a Frers 40 something, with a huge mast. The owner had to go up the mast in a bosun chair, and attach the lifting gear above the first spreaders. Took about 2 hours to get it down all told. I'm next, but we already have removed the lowers, got the forestay pin ready to go, and in 20 minutes we had it down, not hurrying. Our steward has been doing this for over 10 years, and he is never in a hurry, and no one gets hurt, or a boat gets damaged. Yes, I gave him a nice tip. Take off the spreaders, wind instrument, VHF antenna, bungee the stays and take it to the rack. My Cal is now a powerboat. Going downriver on Thursday to the yard where my cradle waits. Steve,I think the boat population in Chicago is down, although we had fewer empty slips on D dock this year. Lots of empty cans. I know the racing numbers are down, except the Mac.
