RE: [Cal_Boats] Spreader tip boots - I like Taylor.

We only use the Harken rollers on lifeline stanchions, never thought about on a spreader. They help the sail during a tack to get inside the rail for a hard upwind grind. If you were to fall on a stanchion, maybe they would also prevent a puncture to your rib cage. If installing before you step the mast You will need to understand well the spreader angle under tension so the install will not prevent proper spreader function. I don’t think I would use these on spreader tips on our discontinuous rig, as I do not think they would protect our film sails very well from the spreader tips. I prefer the cloth padded “maxi pad style” as * the film sails do not stick to it like rubber or other materials, * they breath well, and let rain water wash the salt from the tips. * I don’t trust the buckle and add a bit of red or green electrical tape, depending on the proper side. * They only last @ 3years, which reminds me to clean the salt from the tip before the monel, stainless and aluminum fist fight concludes poorly. * and apply a fresh coating of TefGel as a referee for the next three years. * The big surface keeps the spreader tip from punching a $9,000 genoa in the belly button. * 2008, our brand new Quantum Carbon Fiber 155% had the leech ripped off by a rubber tip during the test sail first tack… * (see $9k sail aforementioned.) Hi Allen, The Taylor Made covers are available for viewing at WM. The cover is like a heavy “cotton / polyester” ribbed canvas, that looks a bit like fire hose cover material. The end is padded with a foam like material. This review was on Amazon These are the industry standard. They last 8 to 10 years, you can clean them with a spray cleaner with a little bleach in it, but bleach will eat them. These provide a lot of protection for your head sails that overlap the mast/spreaders. The other option is white rubber covers made of the same material as fenders. The plastic ones don't last as long as the Taylor made products, and the plastic ones do not provide as much protection for your sails. Finally, the web strap that holds these on is better than zip ties used on the rubber ends. The rubber ends look sleek and shiny. The other option is to tape under the covers. Just make sure water can drain from under the tape to minimize galvanic action. The tape will protect your sails in the unlikely event a spreader end get ripped off. In a 2009 race around Vancouver Island BC (Van Isle 360), we lost a spreader tip cover and the Mylar sail was getting punctured and torn on tacks. I took a Costco white crew sock, cut a square from a foam sleeping pad, and taped and tie wrapped the assembly to the spreader tip. Worked perfectly. If you were to fall on a stanchion, maybe they would also prevent a puncture to your rib cage. If installing before you step the mast You will need to understand well the spreader angle under tension so the install will not prevent proper spreader function. I don’t think I would use these on spreader tips on our discontinuous rig, as I do not think they would protect our film sails very well from the spreader tips. I prefer the cloth padded “maxi pad style” as • the film sails do not stick to it like rubber or other materials, • they breath well, and let rain water wash the salt from the tips. • I don’t trust the buckle and add a bit of red or green electrical tape, depending on the proper side. • They only last @ 3years, which reminds me to clean the salt from the tip before the monel, stainless and aluminum fist fight concludes poorly. • and apply a fresh coating of TefGel as a referee for the next three years. • The big surface keeps the spreader tip from punching a $9,000 genoa in the belly button. • 2008, our brand new Quantum Carbon Fiber 155% had the leech ripped off by a rubber tip during the test sail first tack… • (see $9k sail aforementioned.) I used to use vinyl tape but it gets torn up as you can see in this picture. Last season I used million dollar tape and it does pretty well. It is very slippery being teflon and all. Here is a picture of my spreader. I don't know how this spreader compares to others so don't know if it would be harder or easier on a sail and if the Taylor Made cover would fit.
