I'm not as worried about the actual diesel being the issue later on, more from the stories I've heard about mixing elbows rust and problems, packing gland issues, etc. I am definitely more comfortable with outboards, especially 2 strokes. In was thinking a 2 stroke 15hp, the mercury I have weighs is around 95lbs I believe. Once I bleed the lines I'm sure she will start right up and purr like before. My boat is in the saltwater year round in south Florida, if that makes any difference on maintenance issues. Was not original to the Cal29, so it's a repower, maybe not real old. Find your local authorized dealer, ask around the marina/boatyard for good mechanics. You'll spend a bunch for a new 9.9 four stroke outboard, and I would advise you to stay away from 2 stroke outboards, they are nothing but trouble, had 3 of them, all different brands, all professionally maintained, they were always a question mark. Not what you want. Probably the result of ethanol, that's what the mechanics say. I have an A4 in my 29, starts every time, I have complete confidence in it.David Dobbs CAL29 411 On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 7:45 PM, "LD go… [at] yahoo.ca [Cal_Boats]" > wrote: Hi, A few years ago I had an Islander 28 with a Johnson (ex-long shaft) Saildrive 9.9 h.p.. Once I was out in the open sea it was all sails and nothing but wind power...If you do decide to go outboard I recommend purchasing some thing new or a few years old, this way you know the true condition. One thing about outboards if you take care of them they will run for ever. I would look for a Honda (bigfoot) with remote steering which is a nice option. Happy sailing. I have Cal 29, inboard yanmar diesel, tiller steering. I got the yanmar running, spent about $400 in parts. I'm starting to wonder about other problems I'll find along the way, which require more then I am capable of doing on my own. I'm already tired of bleeding the engine :) I know some models of the 29 came with outboards originally, I'm pretty good working on outboards, they are affordable to replace if needed and require less maintenance. I don't have any plans to sail across the Atlantic, just intracoastal cruising on calm days, maybe some trips from ft Lauderdale to the keys and up the west coast of Florida. So, would an outboard work for the type of cruising I plan on doing? Anyone add one? Thanks for your input. Joe - 1972 Cal 29

I brought my boat with no inboard, a 25 hp on an aluminum bracket, powerful but very heavy, you can see the bracket swinging in rough weather. I replaced the bracket with an SS one, no more problems. Next I got a Honda motor. The tiller only rotates 90 degrees so I can only go with short shaft, otherwise the prop remains in the water on the tilt up position. I traded it in for a Yamaha 9.9 hi trust long shaft, the tiller rotates full 180 degrees so no problem there. I miss the extra power, but I love the deeper prop.
