Charlie- someone on FB said a Christmas tree started it. Spinsheet has already posted some pics as well. It looks like it'll be a total loss from the pics I've seen. Way too much history to be lost . . .

My sympathies to AYC and it's members. Hope they were able to get the silver out. My club, Jackson Park YC in Chicago had a serious fire 2 years ago. A couple of members were present, it was in winter, and took action to mitigate the damage. Chicago FD was quick to respond, and they didn't trash the building. Our club is on Chicago Park District land, and if the insurance company had totaled our building they would likely not have allowed us to rebuild, would have terminated our lease. Turned out we got some nice upgrades with the repairs. I used to hate to pay that premium when I was commodore; it wasn't cheap, but ya gotta have it. Now I am a past commodore, the best possible position.

David, this reminds me of the Southern Yacht Club fire in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Club was destroyed. We sailed the CAL 25 Nationals there in 1985, 1989, and 1993, so I remembered it quite well. The SYC is now back and alive and lively.
Take Care

I hope someone had the bravery and presence of mind to grab the perpetual trophies and rescue them before they were consumed. What worries me about being on a perpetual trophy is that, even if they were rescued and taken to an alternate solar system after our Sun explodes in 4 billion years, the whole Universe is going to go dead in a scant 30 billion years. Hopefully, by then, we'll have figured out how to safely transport them thru a worm hole into a new Universe. Does anyone stay awake at night worrying about that, besides me?Jerry, Shpritz, Cal 24 Mk-1 #71

Well, Jerry, my concerns are similar, but a bit more immediate. If the Higgs field is energetic and is ubiquitous in space, and the universe is expanding, how does the field keep the same strength without violating the conservation of energy. The energy of the field must remain the same since the mass of particles appears to be the same across the universe that we can observe.
My latest info (theories change all the time) is that the sun will expand to swallow the earth, but not explode. Either way, our result is the same. Bu as the sun heats up, our place may not be habitable in another 500 million years. But don’t worry, California will have long since fallen into the sea due to plate tectonics, and MDR will cease to be an overdevelopment problem.
Depending on whose theory one espouses, the universe could end in the Big Crunch, the Big Freeze, or the Big Rip. The latter two could give us a trillion years or so. That one does not bother me a whole lot.
Take Care
Charlie
