Hello,
The last rain we had, I got about a gallon.after two days of rain.
I re-bedded some fittings and slept on her Sunday night, with rain predicted
and didn't see any.or, as much.
I worry about the main deck beam getting and remaining soggy.
While I guess I could try to make her air tight, as someone suggested, I
think he was kidding.
There are waayyyyy too many possible air leak points.
The engine bay vents up into a lazarette, for one. But thanks for the
thought.
: )
I think I'll go down and have someone hit her with a hose while I sit below.
Most water evidence is streaking on the chainplates. Previous owner said he
just wanted to sail and didn't worry about those details.
I also know I have to re-seal the jib sheet tracks..or the rub-rail on
starboard side.
Not sure which but the small berth under that gets wet. Either way, that
will be a two-person job.
Today is beautiful here and I want to go out again. Whales are on the move
already!!
: )
Thanks for the tips.

Hi, tom. I think the bilge water tastes better with Vodka, but then that's
just me. How much water are you getting in?
One common problem is that water enters in one place, runs along an internal
channel somewhere in the overhead, and comes out elsewhere. Do you have any
streaks under the ports? How about a bit of flow coming along the hull
floor from fore or aft. A strategically placed putty dam can find this.
Idea for next time it rains. Grab some of your favorite libation and have a
seat below. Keep scanning overhead, windows, and floor pan.
Best of Luck

Hello again,
'79 Cal 25-2, deck-mounted mast, i presume.
After a good rain, i have water in the bilge.
I cant trace the point of entrance.
I've re-bedded all deck plates on the chainplates and stopped that unsightly
dripping on the bulkheads but the bilge still gets water. I've tasted it so
i know its fresh, coming in from the top, as opposed to salty coming in from
a thru-hull.
I see three nuts on the ceiling of the cabin but can only see one large
screw had on the deck.
I put some goop around the electrical pass-through at the base of the mast,
into the cabin. Possible its still leaking there, i imagine.
Do any of you have any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.
I went out again on Monterey Bay today. Beautimous! 14 kt breeze, 6 kt boat
speed, glassy water! Dolphins and the usual other critters!

You might also check the cockpit drains for leaks, On the CAL 227 they have
been known to crack or disconnect. When you have cracked drains there is
often no leaks until you go under power and the transom sucks down in the
water and the discharge end goes underwater and you may find inches of water
in the cabin.

Tom,
You might try using chalk or a baby powder dusting in areas that you think the leak(s) are coming from. The next time you will be able to find evidence of where water ran towards the bilge.
In our case, it turned out to be the hull to deck joint. The glass tabbing failed or was not applied correctly during manufacturing.

Ohh. Good point. I will check those drain hoses. I have not yet.
I initially thought i was taking it in from the sea, but i do check everyhing after i go out, looking for that stuff.
And i tasted it...fresh. : )
I'm on Monterey bay so its all salt.
There are several seacocks i am watching also, for leakage/failure.
: )
Thanks for the tip.

The bilge on Quantum Evolution is never dry. She is a keel stepped mast and rain enters at the shivs at the masthead and at the halyard openings and runs down into the keel. My float switch has kept the decks dry for 30 years.
What we thought was a hull to deck leak that was dripping in the cabinet just forward of the galley turned out to be the second port light forward that had a tiny gap in the mounting plywood that was running down inside the headliner, hitting the deck joint and only showing up when it hit the bulkhead forward of the galley. Leak sources can be exceedingly hard to trace. Took us 10 years to find that port leak.

I have not re-realed the ports but there has not been obvious evidence of drippage around them.
However, i will now, for good measure.
Thank you.
