saga begins...again

Leaving Saturday, weather dependent, form snowy Montana to Port charlotte, Florida by way of El Paso, Texas. Since we are riding/driving and towing a Dana 24, we were hoping to be out of snow quickly. However, My son's yard in El Paso had snow drifts in it last Sunday, so we are not holding out much hope for warmth until Florida. SV "Submit", Cal cruising 36, will get anew rudder and other upgrades then be launched for a cruise down the rest of the west coast of Florida, up through the keys and off to the Bahamas, buddiy boating at least part of the time with the Dana "Gust-O". Back home late April or early May? As mentioned before, we do occasional write-ups about our "experiences" and then send out an email notice to those who want to know that a new one has been posted in our blog so they can go see it if they wish. Let us know if you want to be added to the notice list or wish to be removed. Installations prior to being launched will/should include, in addition to the rudder, a 100w solar system, a rigid vang and a new wheel pilot. Really looking forward to seeing the old girl again. this 47 year old boat provides us with lots of entertainment1 Reggie and Barbara

Yes, Reggie and Barbara, please keep us in the loop. New rudder was a real plus for Caliente. Electrolysis is hard on the post as there is nowhere to put a zinc except hang one overboard with a clip on the collar bolts. And if you get a foss you may have to shape the top forward edge and reseal. (The shape we got was for the 40 and there is a slope difference between post and keel.) I forgot, is this your first replacement? new rudder

r good2015-12-29 22:48 UTC
Yes, this is our first replacement. The current rudder had electrolysis damage where the stock meets the rudder, and it had been repaired by grinding out then welding to fill and grinding down. I was nervous about the tensile strength changes from the grinding, welding and grinding. I did not want it to snap off in a storm. Also, the rudder blade had previous salt water intrusion and I was worried about corrosion at the internal welds. there are enough things to worry about when things go bad around a sailboat without having to worry about things you can fix. I also just ordered a new rudder for my Cal 27 T/2. I'm really hoping the rudder I am sent is correct for my Cal Cruising 36 sailboat. I'm not set up to modify it properly. Re: [Cal_Boats] new rudder

It's not hard just annoying. We conferred with foss, as to why and how. You treat it like a surfboard; match the pitch of the hull (in our case it wouldn't go all the way in. )So, we took a straight edge , drew a line parallel to hull,it was about 1/2 in. or so down on leading edge, up to just before stock. I sawed with my Japanese fine tooth flat saw. Then I put west epoxy on, then layered two skins of cloth on, sanding between and cleaning each time, feathering into original. Then, as I usually do, I painted entire rudder with 2000E. Followed with bottom paint. It was unexpected, and took almost a week. The yard was annoyed as we had to be jacked up extra high. At least it could be warm. We also put heavy marine grease in tube when inserting, and used a bearing/bushing ring. Ours is a shoemaker design, made by so cal foss co. It's almost as deep as the keel. Elliptical.
