RE: [Cal_Boats] Tillers?
Gerald Sobel2016-01-06 00:56 UTC
I have a wonderful hand carved tiller that came with be venerable Cal 24. One of me dock mates, specifically, none other than Robert E. Lee's great great grand chile, (can you guess what his name is? One guess each only---also a former Cal 25, O'Day 27 owner)-- gave me a bodacious varnished laminated 'S' curved tiller as a replacement for the poor gray and cracking thing. After reading Charlie's venerable commentary on the benefits of the 'S' shape, I'm considering reconsidering bringing it down to the boat and seeing how it would fit, being as that the one I have do hit the seats when it's hard over unless you swivel her up....but...the additional weight on the boat? It looks like it must weigh at least two or three pounds more than me olde one...and TRADITION. What about tradition? I'd have to find someone who can put some fancy hand carved engravings in the new one...how to you do such a thing with a laminated tiller? It's a puzzlement.

Tom, a lot of the photos in Rudder
Craft web site are messed up in perspective. Looks like
they got compressed in one direction. Here are some more
realistic shapes from Fawcetts Boat Supply in Annapolis.
There are some errors in the table. The O’Day 27 tiller
really is like “A”. Note the 9.75 inch rise specified
in the table. That is what I use. I should be able to
get pictures on my boat tomorrow. Prices at Fawcetts are
very appealing. I also get a discount as a member. I
kind of split my boat business between Fawcetts and West
Marine (which is only a quarter mile from Fawcetts).
I don’t like the CAL 25 rudder
design for reasons I gave before. Take CareCharlie Annapolis From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com

Craft on the web. I use an O’Day 27 stock tiller on my
CAL 25 (flat deck) because I like the curvature to clear the
cockpit seats. I believe the 2-25 tiller base sits higher
than the 25 base, so clearing the cockpit seats is not a
problem. Just measure the fork width and height (1.5”
by 2” typical), a length you are comfortable with, and
decide on a curvature you like. I don’t think there is a
“stock” 2-25 part (but I could be wrong). You might
have to sand down the tiller width at the fork a bit.
Drill holes to fit. Just make sure to recoat sanded parts
and holes before installing. Do you use a tiller extender? I
use a Forespar telescoping (the shorter one), but they
ain’t cheap. Allows me to sit up on the coaming and
drive. CheersCharlieCAL 25Annapolis

Gents,
Yes, pics please.
I’m going to take comparable pics of Resa and I will measure also and post them back if anyone is interested.
· Floor to top of lazarette for clearance
· Length from rudder out.
(I had a sailing partner that could not..would not clear the tiller so I could hard tack. “Dude..your butt is in the way. MOVE! And let the boom come about please”)
But I feel kind of like Jerry…is there a tradition? An originality motif?
And I don’t have an allegiance to any supplier but I do feel that West Marine is a bit high, compared to lady Google-net, so I can check with Fawcett.

Thank you.

Jerry, you are right. Rotten wood weighs a lot less than the intact stuff.
Tom, yeah, a lot of the folks there know me. I’ll be near there tomorrow (boat photos time), and could check on their stock. Not sure what shipping would be.

Hi,
Yes, i have alot of experience but no longer have the tools or shop space.
I would love to see pics though.
:-)
I have made things by soaking/steaming wood and jigging them up.
Had a nice table saw with a nice fence, band saw, router, scroll saw, ugghh!
A 6' tool chest with enough tools to build/rebuild any engine or anything mechanical.
All my electrical test and soldering stuff....oh well. Its just stuff.
For now though, them days is past.
:-)
