RE: [Cal_Boats] Forespar Marelon Winches : My review 2-25
Thanks Greg and others.
The jib has two Barient #10’s that seem adequate in that role.
It’s ‘only’ a 2-25, and while maybe bigger is better, I don’t want to replace them just because.
I have other things that need my attention (and $$) first.
I disassembled, cleaned, did a VISUAL inspection of the bits and all the pawls and springs are fine.
The #6 seemed mousey initially but it was there. Now that it has failed, I will upgrade it.
I am looking for a #10 but are you suggesting I maybe even look for a #20 for that position?
I found a guy that has a pile of used Lewmar and Harkens.
Others with 2-25…what size are yours?

Tom,
I don't know about the Forespar winches, but I know we needed all new winches and decided to go all out and get Andersen winches. We've got (3) #20 on the deck house for halyards and the mainsheet and a couple of #50 for the jib sheets. Not cheap, but they work amazingly well. And they are all stainless so they will never degrade in the sun.

Subject: [Cal_Boats] Forespar Marelon Winches : My review
Hello,
Nobody has asked but here is my recent experience with Forespar Marelon #6 winches.
My 2-25 came with one deck-mounted for the main halyard. It’s a small, #6, synthetic.
Initially, it seemed fine but within a short period of time, the ‘plastic’ gear started to deform under the metal handle and it would ‘cam’ out.
I contacted Forespar and they sent me a new one but he also said…no more.
After only 2 outings, using the unit within its design parameters; sail size and boat LOA and handle length; it has failed again.
This time the pawls inside ‘bent’ and cracked.
I pull the sheet most of the way manually pointed into the wind, then use the winch with a double-wrap to get the last 6-8” with the boom ‘loose’.
Regardless, I will not use that piece again.
I’m now searching for a #10, at least, METAL winch for the main.
This is just MY experience. It may be an anomaly.
Or, am I doing something wrong?
…tom
