We did, (2000E then bottom paint) have you verified the shape to match your angles of hull, especially forward? Reggie, that begs the question, why do some hulls get blisters, and others not? Maybe you can pose that question to Foss.Also...since most boats are still made with polyester resin, are new boats given barrier coat before bottom coat? (why would you want vinyl ester resin in a new boat, if PVC pipe gets brittle in the Sun?) Which leads to the next question: If bottom coat is supposed to be applied within a week of splashing, do people apply bottom paint after buying a new boat that's been sitting at the dealers lot on the 'hard' for months? Jerry, not all bottom paints have immediate splash requirements. Some dealers sell new boats, and then have them "commissioned " to splash. The reason some boats get blisters and others don't is too broad to answer definitively. The absence of blisters does not necessarily mean water is not getting into the laminate. To the contrary, some older boats don't get blisters because water passes back and forth through the laminate easily. Polyester resin in the early days of boat building was not mixed very precisely in many shops. The variance in layup quality as well as layup schedule and resin mixture all play a part in a boats ability to resist blisters. Vinylester has epoxy in it, which keeps water out better then polyester. Epoxy is great at keeping water out, but yes it breaks down in the sun. Protecting it from UV is key to keeping it strong. West system layups and coating will break down in just a couple of years if left outside in the sun unpainted. The sun breaks down polyester boats too, as does repeated cycles of stress, but boats have been so over built, that even w the degradation of 30 - 40 years they are still usable. ....your most durable and most expensive boat would be a boat made w epoxy from the get go. sounds good, if you haven't installed yet, try painting that part of hull and rudder top, makes it easier. did you get a bushing-like washer shape from them? We got one made with a material they called "unattainium". When you drill the hole through the top for the headpiece, (we have tiller) you may find what we found, the holes were apparently drilled as rudder lay on flat surface, tilting the shaft a bit, and after trying to figure it out, a machinist friend of ours calculated it out and drilled it while on our pickup tailgate. They were not straight through as if it was done vertically. Perfect fit, glad we didn't do that ourselves.
