Good stuff..ok. my thoughts: the pin simply holds the pawl in place. I guess it could be cut at an angle to correspond with the gear which would explain why it worn at an angle. An ‘unsprung assembly’ test would help prove that out. Next is to figure out how the spring would go in, if it were properly shaped. Then, see if you can reshape it slowly. That’s all I can some up with. But, yes..any additional imagery would be of interest to me. I don’t know if anyone else on this list cares.? I would like to see another area CAL 31 owner pop in with some thoughts. The CAL boat and it’s owners seem to be DIY folks. I’ve had a couple of BMW 2002’s and with that car, DIY is required and the ‘support groups’ love it that way! I did spend some time with lady Google looking but could not find anything more than the brochure. One can infer that, originally, Barient was the primary source of winches on the CALs but a search for Barient led me to this company: http://www.huttonwinches.com/products/spares And page 13 of the brochure gave clues to vendor and that might merely be a ‘red herring’. “Barient reefing winch under the gooseneck” From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] Sent: Monday, January 18, 2016 9:28 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] HELP! CAN YOU ID THIS? Thanks for the help Tom! I'm a mechanical kind of guy too :-) Things I found interesting; #1 Pawl looks warn at an angle, how is this possible when everything is aligned and secure? #2 Pawl only goes in one way, tapered pivot radius #3 Is the Roll Pin to hold the Pawl or is it an attachment for the spring somehow? #4 No name anywhere on this thing! Would a short video of assy/disassy/operation help? HA! I just checked #1, the mating teeth inside the spool are NOT straight cut. they are angled so the Pawl is angled to match, that is why it looks warn and that is why it only goes in one way!! I forgot my yahoo password..but, I would not yet dremel that pawl. They generally are heat-treated and if you apply more heat and then not oil-quench it, it gets brittle. Or, spend $50 for a replacement winch. (I just did a compelte disassemble, clean and re-assemble of a stainless Barient 10P I got yesterday. Lubed it with PTFO…good as new. I digress) The pawl looks fairly worn as does the gear it rides on and the hole the pin sits in, but, like I would do, you want to fix it first! Cool. (where do you live? I LOVE doing these kinds of reverse-engineer projects from little data or pictures. Seriously!!) Give me some time to study these pics please. Many of you have helped me. It’s time I give back a little. Everything on the boat is Schaefer except winches are Barient. Schaefer can not ID Here is the winch apart, you can see how mangled that spring is. Did I mention that there is not slot in the pawl for the spring? There is space for one end of the spring to fit inside the rollpin and the fit behind the pawl. I'm tempted to take a dremel and cut a slot in the pawl and use a standard winch spring On Friday, January 15, 2016 9:36 AM, "'TomDressler' tb… [at] verizon.net [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: What brand is that winch? I have found so many good docs on the internet. Is there a small groove at the base of a spring pivot post? Or maybe one at the top that a c-clip pops into? Those little grooves are frequently only a couple ‘thou and get gooped up and even a finger nail can’t just detect them. If it’s an older winch, who knows what ‘technology’ was utilized. In the dark photo but from my vast experience in tearing apart single speed winches (2), it looks like there is a post and a spring should be attached like the red outline? Or maybe it’s 180 degrees on some other post? I have rebuilt engines before though and this is a simple mechanism. That picture is very dark, but mechanically speaking, it needs to apply pressure to the pawl at all times. ..tom From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] Sent: Friday, January 15, 2016 9:02 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: [Cal_Boats] HELP! Here is my odd ball, boom mounted outhaul winch. I have repaired the pivot plate it rotates on but the pawl spring was so mangled that I can't figure out how it was installed. There is no groove in the pawl like a "normal" winch. It measures about 2.5" dia and uses a 1/2" drive ratchet.
