Replacement portals for 1974 CAL 2-25
Shauna's Gmail2016-01-29 04:43 UTC
We need to replace the portals on our CAL 2-25 MystiCAL. They are attached directly to the boat with no frame.
Does anyone know of a good source for replacements?

I would like to see a pic of that.
Mine are stuck on from the outside with some screwed on decorative frame on the inside. The frame appears to be barely structural, but i guess the provide some clamping force.

Unfortunately, she is shrink wrapped right now. The plexiglass is held on to the boat by a bead of caulk and a dozen or more nuts and bolts. No frames at all.

Hi, Shauna. The through-bolted arrangement on your 2-25 ports does not
sound like original equipment. (I could be wrong.) A call to Mark Heacox
at number below will tell you. Go Windows made the original ports for many
Cal types back in the days when they actually called them windows.

Shauna,
While removing and re-sealing mine, I observed that they are simply “plastic clear things put into a hole randomly carved into the boat.”
Look at the opening. It looks like it was hand carved with a coping saw.
So, any port should fit…approximately.

Shauna, another thing to look at. I’m pretty sure that Cal 2-25s were not built until 1976/1977. Look on the upper part of the exterior starboard stern. That HIN code tells the date of manufacture.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Replacement portals for 1974 CAL 2-25
Mike's Yahoo2016-01-29 17:30 UTC
I agree with Charlie. The original fixed ports in the salon can be replaced with the same size ports through Marks Plastics. I've looked into this but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
The original (forward) opening ports were Beckson 512's, which can be replaced with the same or as I did with Tri-matrix something or other by NewFound Metals.
It is also possible to jury-rig a fixed port by using cut acrylic sheets, that are either through bolted or affixed by 2-sided tape to the outside of the boat. The second of these alternate methods is explained by Don Casey in articles in Boat US and Sail Magazine. He explains the process of cutting, painting (for the flange overlap, for appearance) the acrylite or whatever type sheet you use and the specific type of 3-M 2-sided tape as well as the process of filling the void with Dow 795. You may find this process to be better than purchasing new ones. Alternatively, you
may find the cost of materials and/or tools necessary to complete the job to be at or close to the port replacement cost.
I disagree with a prior statement that any port will do. A search on the web reveals that the fixed ports in question are not a standard size (if I recall they are approximate 42" long and are slightly curved to match the hull) and not easily replaced with an off the rack port. As such, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a production port (e.g Lewmar, Beckson) that would fit.
Please let me know if you reach out to Marks and if it would be cheaper if you and I ordered at the same time.
I hope this helps.

Mike Casillo

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the added info.
I’m a NEW owner and that was my comment.
I was pointing out what I observed.
The portal cutouts were not at all ‘perfect’ and from disassembly, I simply inferred that I could fit another of similar size. Thankfully, I don’t need to…YET.
It looks like some 14 y.o. got in there with a drywall saw and started cutting.
: )
Thank you for adding more clarification.
I am here to learn from those with more experience.

As would be usual in the trade, the cut-outs were more haphazard on Mondays and Fridays than the rest of the week. That’s one reason most of the ports had external frames.

Best,

Shauna,
While removing and re-sealing mine, I observed that they are simply “plastic clear things put into a hole randomly carved into the boat.”
Look at the opening. It looks like it was hand carved with a coping saw.
So, any port should fit…approximately.

Unfortunately, she is shrink wrapped right now. The plexiglass is held on to the boat by a bead of caulk and a dozen or more nuts and bolts. No frames at all.

I would like to see a pic of that.
Mine are stuck on from the outside with some screwed on decorative frame on the inside. The frame appears to be barely structural, but i guess the provide some clamping force.

We need to replace the portals on our CAL 2-25 MystiCAL. They are attached directly to the boat with no frame.
Does anyone know of a good source for replacements?
