The CAL 39 mark 1 has a steel beam. At least my finds does. He picks up a lot of silver with his boat racing (it is heavily modified, like no skeg, cut down transom, new interior). My 39 mark 2 doesn't have a steel beam, but glass reinforcement. You can inspect this with a pin camera. Here are very good "working class" boats. Design excellent, build quality where you can't change it (deck, hull, mast) excellent. The interior build quality is where you might find shortcomings. I agree with the statement to check for bad modifications/"upgrades" by the PO. I was lucky mine as it was owned by an engineer. I love mine. Sails so sweet. Tom CAL 39 Serendipity Cane Island, WA

I have a 1979 Cal39MKII shallow draft here in Miami for sale. the first $22K will take her home. The boat sails great, it is perfect for a retired couple, easy to singlehand sailing, turns in a dime, and the 5'6" draft covers about 80% of Florida keys or Bahamas sailing. I have moved on to a EDELCAT33 catamaran which suits my current family/time availability schedule (great fastboat but it just does not like to tack/turning radius is large)
