Yanmar YSM8 question

TomDressler2016-02-16 14:10 UTC
Hello, Are there any diesel 'experts' here, specifically the Yanmar YSM8.single cylinder. I have a couple of questions regarding performance. Internet and other sources are pointing me all over the place. Before I contact a local diesel mechanic, I thought I would start here. Thanks. ..tom Resa Cal 2-25 Monterey, Ca --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Hi folks, Joe and I chatted. (he called me, knowing that I live in Ca and it's likely he won't actually be touching my engine.I love that attitude!!) I'm going to do some investigation and some work and I WILL post back what I saw and what resolution I arrive at. I know someone else has similar issues now and again. If you need engine help and are in the Ct are.Sound Marine is a sound choice! Thanks Joe. The guys at Gallery Marine in Seattle are helpful. Although, I will warn you that they will advise you that a YSM is a "disposable" engine. Random and/or intermittent perf issues: tighten all clamps on fuel lines, pump some fuel from bottom of tank and inspect in a glass container, fresh fuel, replace hoses and filter mechanism replacement and use new clamps, check air filter, check fuel pickup for holes, clean tank, rebuild injector, check compression, rebuild fuel pump, make sure cable linkages are working well. This has been my experience across a variety of Yanmar, Universal and Westerbecke engines, including a YSM that is still running. Frankly, it is almost crazy to expect a 40+ year old fuel system to work well without this kind of long term maintenance. The list is close to priority order. One thing to check is what filter elements you have, some folks put too fine a filter on their primary (e.g. 3 micron instead of 10), better to have a coarser primary and a finer secondary filter setup. The good news is that most of this is not expesnsive. ..and while I have not resolved my issue, I did go, at dusk, investigate more deeply. There is a 'first filter'..a Parker Racor R12S thing that has goop at the bottom of it. (I understand goop is a technical term for junk and sediment) The second filter, on the engine is impossible for me to get to without making a large ecological spill in my engine area so I'll wait until I get new filter elements before I take lines off. I also need to get a bucket and lots of rags for cleanup. It will have to be the weekend. Although the weather WAS acceptable, I cannot..WILL not work in the dark, unless I must. : ) More later.. RE: [Cal_Boats] Yanmar YSM8 question

The 12S is a 2-3 micron filter. It has been recommended to me to use a 10 micron filter for the primary (first filter), and a finer filter (3 micron) for the secondary filter. THe 12T is the 10 micron filter. Sounds like you need to replace the filter. You should also get a sample of the fuel from the bottom of your tank. YOu can use a cheapy pump for harbor freight for that. If it looks like crud, then pump out all the fuel and replace it. Or have it polished by a pro, which has a real cost. The suggestion of replacing the secondary filter and just feeding it clear fuel from a portable fuel tank is a good divide and conquer triage mechanism. regards, peter To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com; pe… [at] hotmail.com From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Date: Wed, 17 Feb 2016 10:43:05 -0800 Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Yanmar YSM8 question ..and while I have not resolved my issue, I did go, at dusk, investigate more deeply. There is a ‘first filter’..a Parker Racor R12S thing that has goop at the bottom of it.(I understand goop is a technical term for junk and sediment)The second filter, on the engine is impossible for me to get to without making a large ecological spill in my engine area so I’ll wait until I get new filter elements before I take lines off.I also need to get a bucket and lots of rags for cleanup. It will have to be the weekend.Although the weather WAS acceptable, I cannot..WILL not work in the dark, unless I must.: ) More later..Thank you. ..tom From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 16, 2016 9:32 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Yanmar YSM8 question The guys at Gallery Marine in Seattle are helpful.
