Hmm. So here you are discussing spars, spreaders, boom and Ballengers. Wednesday, for you Pac-Coasters (SF-MRY), if you recall, it was a bit bumpy out there. My friend was coming down from SF-Half Moon Bay and into Mry to pick me up for a sail to Morro Bay. Wednesday night was rough, it seems. When I went to the dock to catch lines for him, I saw a pile of hardware and software lying on the deck of his 63' ketch. There was a pile of mainsail, aluminum, sheets and halyards all piled up. His boom was bent/broken about 1/3 out from the mast at a 30 degree angle. Shouldn't they be straight? He said he saw some 20' sea and 30kt blows. His jibe preventer stiffened, the moment arm out past that exceeded the limit and BOOM! So now he's working with Ballengers to get a new boom made up..and get all of his rigging re-done. He said.yep.sailing.you go from port to port and stop long enough to fix the stuff that broke en route. He's taking it quite well, actually. I learned how to disassemble a bloom. We'll continue to Morro Bay in May. ..tom From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] Sent: Friday, March 25, 2016 3:29 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Wooden Spreaders; Tips Wanted (double Spreader mast) Hello Ed and Helen. Buzz Ballenger is a great guy and a wealth of knowledge and experience. He supplied a mast, boom and rigging for my Santa Cruz 27 PHYLLIS SWIFT after her dismasting in the 1989 SC 27 Nationals on the Berkeley Circle when the starboard lower turnbuckle failed. Buzz also gave me great service and a good deal when I replaced the rigging and spreader bar in 2012 on YELLOW JACK USA57313. A preventer rigged forward is not really necessary on a sailboat under 30" Over 30' it's benefits are often overshadowed by conditions that can cause broken spars in the event of a broach or jibe. Steering downwind in heavy conditions require constant concentration and experience and can be a challenge particularly at night. Reduce sail to reduce pressure on the rig in heavy displacement boats that are limited to hull speed and unable to surf. An expensive lesson off the California coast, no injuries to the crew however! Right. No injuries to crew. The preventer is in place. This boat is 63' loa and the boom is 16'-3"! Oh, did i mention it's a ferrocement? Big loads on that baby indeed! Ballenger will build him a new boom and he will get other rigging replaced at the same time.
