Cal 30 in Michigan

Cal sailors: Spring keeps threatening to happen so I am starting work on my boats. Meanwhile, the local organization that operates our historic schooner replica is selling donated boats. The guy in charge sent me a photo and said "it's a Cal." I looked at the full keel and keel-hing rudder, and at the cove stripe, and said "I don't think so." But he persisted and sure enough, it's a Cal. So we've got a Cal 30 for sale. Here are the specs: > http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=864 The boat has 11 bags of sails. I don't know what's in the bags, but it appears that there are enough sails to keep you active changing them. Atomic Four engine. The boat is located in Traverse City, MI. (northwestern lower peninsula) and is on a trailer. If anybody is interested, contact me and I'll put you in touch with the member who handles boat sales. Chris Campbell

Chris, Yes, this is a Cal 30 - - Original - - At Crescent Sail Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe Mich we have one. It is owned by two brothers who got it from their dad some years ago. It has done just under 40 Port Huron to Mackinac races. I'll attach a photo of it. Wow! Those Cal 30's are fantastic. Keel is similar to the Lapworth 24 of "Dove" fame, and the Gladiator. Fast boats, all. Low freeboard is nice! Plus mellow ability to keep going in the same direction when you let go of the tiller. This brings back memories. My father bought one of these in 1962. Then it was one of those new fangled fiberglass boats everyone was talking about. We raced here in the northwest and cruised all over what is now known as the Salish Sea with a family of 6 aboard. It was a fine platform for all of these activities. She sailed nicely and was very competitive racing in the 60s. This one looks (at a distance) like it is very original. If not much has been modified, it could be a good starter boat for someone at a good price.
