Advice Wanted - Where and How to Sell my Cal 2-27
Michael D2016-03-28 12:37 UTC
Hello Everyone,
It's been a great decade to be part of this email list. It's now time to pass the torch on to someone else for our Cal 2-27. As you may previously read, my wife and I purchased a 1985 Kaufman 47. Two boats is just too much for us to deal with, so now it's time to let Magic go on to a new home/owner. She's a great boat, sea worthy, and well maintained. As you probably know, brokers don't want much to do with boats that sell for less than $50K. So for the time being, I have listed Magic on the local Craigs List, and Sailboat Listings. Perhaps some of you out there have gone through this and can offer some recommendations and experience with selling a boat.
Thanks!Michael DuvallPompano Beach, FL

I've had one boat for 48 years and the other, my delightful Cal 20, for
17, so selling boats isn't my field of expertise. But it's always fun
to shop, isn't it, and I do like to run my eyes over the classified ads
in /Good Old Boat/ magazine. If you're not a subscriber, find a library
or newsstand where you can check it out.

It is harder to Sell a boat than to buy one...We had a Cal 29 that we
restored and was truly TURN KEY
we listed at 18K ....and bought a Cal36 (very "Good" deal ) however it
was laying at opposite end of the state
400 miles south and needed a lot of work ...after showing the Cal 29 at
least 10 or 12 times to serious Buyers
(these are people that bought boats not lookie lous) Ever lost sail chipped
away at our soul ...and buyers bought
more expensive nicer boats ....We have found a Cat 22 for free on
Craigslist...on a trailer pumped it out and
towed it home..sold to a young couple 1200 dollers...Who restored it in our
driveway... they did a great
job ...and put it the upper harbor at Santa Cruz ca. ..They liveaboard
with a big dog ...then tsunami hit
Santa Cruz and they came though un hurt ...We invited them to watch
lighted boat parade on a friends Cat 30
...They could not believe the SPACE that a 30 footer has....We made an
appt. to show them our Beloved Cal29
they really liked ...at this point we had Cal 29 and Cal36 and bought a
friends Cal 30.(who sold it then deal fell
through at the last minute) ...Here's Our boat WE are ASKING
18,000....However you can have it for $14,000
On Payments no money down $500 month ...no interest ..miss one payment we
get boat back ...they bought it and
sailed to Sausalito where He had a job at a start up 35 people working
...His Boss found out that he had boat
they went out after work alot......the company folded but he was the last
employee ...They paid off the boat
now he has a job @ apple ( with a boss who sails with him offen and has
bought Hanse 34)
One trick I have had success with is posting ad under Sublets and
shares ....On Craigslist list
"Buy this Sailboat for $8900...and stay up to 3 nites a week for $275 mo. "
I sold a Bayliner Buckeneer ...But rental s In SF BAY are High ...But the
1st time buyer dose not Have a BOAT
they have to sell 1st...GOOD Luck Mike.. Also I taken boat in trade to
made the deal happen an sold that boat
cheaply...it 2 years to sell our 29 that 24 months slipfees ...Plus the
"new" boat comes with slip fees Also...
I Will NOT DISCLOSE how many slip fees we now pay for ...edward Cal 36

There is a Cal-27 on Craigslist locally. Actually it is on there three
times. Once for $9400, once for $8500 and later for $4500. There is a
second one neatby for $4000. As far as I can tell, we are involved in a
dying sport. Kind of like selling a house in a town where the plant
closed. I have no idea what to tell my kids to do with Papoose if I were
to die tomorrow. It is a nice boat. Looks beautiful, new sails, rebuilt
engine, new electronics, wins most of the races it enters, and is probably
worth zero. I am sure your Cal-27 is worth more.

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } I bought a cal 2-27 for $400, great deal right? Problem is taking care of all the "deferred maintenance". A term I have come to laugh at. It was auctioned so PO had no dog in the fight but still gave me bad info. I'm in it for the long haul. May be the most expensive boat I've ever owned. I have a vision of what it will be like...

The most expensive boat you can get is a free boat.

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } You have stated the truth. Well at least I'm learning something. In Providence, RI for another week and it really puts you in the mood... To go sand the bottom of that boat, finish fixing the rudder, install the new prop shaft, install the new gauges, ... Oh hell, I don't know when it will be in the water. If only I could throw money at it.
