Jim,I have to ask about your comment about the Out Board not as effective in a heavy sea as an A4. It is lack of power or cavatation? Sorry I don't have more detailed. I do love the outboard. Once it is pulled up , the boat sails like a dream. No turbulence felt on the rudder from the prop and shaft that aren't there. I also found that the boat floated higher in the back end w the inboard removed and the outboard hanging off the transom. Good luck. If you are not afraid of taking a sawzaw to your transom and doing some glass work, you won't regret it. The outboard I used has the extra long shaft(25" I think). It seldom cavitates even when under sail On Mar 31, 2016, at 10:34 PM, Joseph Schoepp jo… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Jim, Thanks, that helps a lot! JoeCal 29 Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android I will add that I did not want to do an external bracket, because it puts a lot of weight off the end of the transom and by having it hung off the transom itself, the Yamaha 9.9 high thrust w the tiller works very well. The throttle and shift are easy to reach a the engine tiller in the up position. I cut my transom to the desired height. I found the plywood that was factory installed was not adequate to support the engine to my liking, so I then cut the tray out where the water drains out of the cockpit, installed a thicker piece of plywood, reglassed the tray and everything has worked well. I had an old cal 29 brochure which showed the option in a line drawing profile and took it from there. I love my outboard, but you have to realize it will not push through a heavy sea like an atomic 4 inboard. The Yamaha high thrust gives about the same backing power as an atomic 4 w a folding prop that is clean. I do a little over 6 knots under power wide open flat water and usually do about 5.5 Hope this helps a bit On Mar 31, 2016, at 7:44 PM, saylorran sa… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Does anyone have an original Cal 29 that came with an outboard? the answer to that is probably yes. Lack of power and cavitation will come in to play probably at the same time. Even w the deep 25" shaft, in a heavy sea way, with it hanging off the back, it can catch some air. I have not personally experienced the limits of what the engine can push, just sharing what I believe. I love my outboard on my 29, but I fully believe that if shit hits the fan, I will be sailing not powering. A cal 29 w a double reefed main can take a hell of a lot of wind. I would also add that the A4 is around 30hp so even after subtracting a bit for lost hp, you have at least twice the raw power of a 9.9hp outboard. If you decide to not cut the boat and need a heavy duty, tubular, stainless steel, adjustable outboard mount, I have one for sale for $100. It will easily handle up to a 15hp motor.
