Ahoy all,
This video is from the St. Patrick's race. We had winds 20 to 25 knts with gusts higher, seas were 4 to 6 ft average. The last leg was a 14 mile DDW from offshore. Out Patient was surfing speeds over 12 knts at times with a 3/4 oz S2 chute up. In the video is a Mull 30 with an an ayso up that had been hitting speeds of over 25 knts on the way home. Just before they entered the harbor they caught a wave, rounded up and hit the detached breakwater.

You can see the boat round up before washed on the rock's, the next wave carried the boat up and over. The bow guy was thrown off when they hit and one of the of the crew got the spin sheet wraped around his leg below the knee and cut him to the bone. The crew quickly applied a turnaqit to stop the blood and saved his life. He has been thru 2 surgeries and they were able to save his leg. He has a long road to recovery. Interesting how some things get fixed in our minds. One of them for me
is the interview with one of those world cruisers. The interviewer asked
her if it weren't frightening out there in the middle of the ocean. Oh
no, she said, that's not frightening. It's the hard stuff around the
edges that's frightening. I think it's memorable because it matches
experience. It's harbors, channels, breakwaters, rocks, and things of
that sort that scare the bejeezus out of us, mostly because we've all
had close calls or various disasters involving them.
