Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 30 Holding Tank
The US MSD law went into effect in 1977, was not widely enforced until
1980.
I thought Canada was actually MORE strict than the USA? Well ,maybe only
on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain?
Those bladder tanks may not need a vent to allow for expansion and
emptying, but poop, when in an unventilated tank tends to grow stinky
bacteria, with a good source of fresh air the bacteria that develops
tends to break down the poop without odor, don't let Peggy Hall hear you
say holding tanks (even bladder tanks) don't need a vent! Peggy Hall is
THE expert on holding Tank technology, and used to post often on this
list. Adding a proper vent to the bladder tank that we had on out old CAL
21 reduced the stick emitted from the tank.

Good Gravy people, it's only been a Federal requirement like since 1976!
Where are all these boats with no MSD coming from? Canada?
Manufacturers couldn't sell them in the US without one after the law came
into effect. My 1973 Cal and my 1978 boat had them from the factory.
Some "unscrupulous" manufacturers may have sold the boat without a head
(leaving it to the owner to install) in order to get around the rule.
But really? Non-compliant for 40 years? Wow...
Simplest way to get compliant is a Y-valve (lockable) and a tiny hard
tank or a bladder tank.
My 1978 boat had a Y-valve ahead of the tank and the tank was as clean
and fresh as the day it was installed right up until I pulled it in 2006.
Never once had that Y-valve ever been moved to the "Tank" position. I
replaced it with a Vetus 15 gallon bladder. Hung it up in the back of
the head sink cabinet from some eye-nuts screwed onto the end of a couple
of the toe-rail bolts. Laid right up against the hull side out of the
way. Add a deck suction fitting to the tank or if using a bladder, just
put a T in the line between the Y and the bladder. They suck just fine
through the same fitting they fill from. Vents are semi-optional on
bladders since they expand and contract with the contents.
I like the bladder on smaller boats with limited occasional use since
they take up almost no space when empty but still have adequate capacity
for a weekend in that pristine cove. The rule-beater tanks are only
about 6 gallons and depending on your head and penchant for pumping,
won't give you a lot of flushes. Over 30 feet or so, it's not too hard
to find room for a 20-35 gallon tank. If you have a production boat
(that remained in production after 1975) somewhere there is a
manufactured tank that was installed in your model boat by the factory.
You just need to do a bit of research to find where to get one and where
it goes.

I have a 29 and it had the same setup of direct discharge when I got it.
Before going to my final setup I purchased an msd porta potty, which if
your just doing occasional sailing with low use, will at least make you
legal. You can hook it up to a deck pump out fitting or leave it as a
normal porta potty. However we are about to do full time cruising, so I
needed another solution. I measured and tried all different areas before
I decided on a composting toilet. The areas I considered, and they may
work for you, are putting a tank in the locker area behind the head, saw
it on someone's website, but my ac unit is already there. The next spot
was to move the freshwater tank from under the vbirth and put the holding
tank there. Someone also mentioned to me putting the tank a under the
vbirth forward of the freshwater tank, but I believe it needed to be a
custom tank. After figuring on all costs (tank, hoses, deck fitting,
etc) I decided it was just more cost effective for me to use a composting
head. Hope that helps some.

We have a Cal 30 (the first one not the -2 or ..) and have to install a
holding tank and sanitary system. Just has a pipe to the thru-hull,
which is probably original. Has anyone done it? I cannot seem to find a
place to put a holding tank, because under the V-berth is all triangular.
Still looking at plasticwatertanks.com, but... I asked about a custom
tank ($1000). We cannot get insurance or park at most marinas or go to
Catalina until we have a holding tank.
Any ideas?
