Tom. Not always. My customer-of 39 years-[yeah that's how long his plastic solar pool system has been in operation]-, Dr. Reese Polesky, only recommends surgery as a last resort.
However I discovered that BOTH quarterbacks in the Super Bowl GAME had neck surgery. On the North Carolina side, the QB was nearly paralyzed in a HS game, and it was so successful that, when he returned to the sport AFTER COLLEGE, he rose to the top in the sport as a professional. So, what can I say?
Best,
Jerry and Shpritz
PS: It's very humbing to know us Cal sailors have such a wonderful, caring family, who care about each other in ways far beyond technical problems with good old boats. Thank you from the bottom of my spine!

Neurosurgeons will
ALLWAYS recommend…umm...surgery.I resolved my
‘pinched nerve caused by a bulging DISC’ with
self-administered hydro-therapy and stretching.“Yes, I see that
in the MRI. And I get that you want to remove the offending
disc and fuse my vertebrae. But, let’s try something
different FIRST, shall we?” All tingling
gone…no surgery..no post-op forever stiffness..or
accidental ‘oops’ in surgery. ..tom

Woes Jerry,I
didn't even mention my neck. I have bad ones there
too, Makes the last 2 fingers of my left hand tingle and
go numb. I have 3 bad ones there. Surgeons can fix that
too. I have a club member who had that surgery last winter,
I need to find out how it went. My GP doesn't
recommend it, I trust her opinion.David

Fair enough Jerry.
I did generalize.
: )
thanks.
And now, back to our regular programming.
This weekend, if it doesn’t rain in Monterey area, I’m diving back into my Yanmar issue.
Thanks for the support.
