Spartite Anyone

Ahoy, Our rig is stepped. The original wooden mast wedges need replacement. Some were "missing", and some were damaged during removal. Anyone here use Spartite? Recommendations? Alternatives? Suggestions? While I'm at it, what are your thoughts on mast boots? Thanks!Michael Duvall

We had almost the same problem earlier this year and I was not really sure I wanted to use Spartite. I ended up just cutting a bunch of wedges of different shapes from some extra teak I had around and wrapped the mast plate with 2" wide rescue tape. We have a canvas cover that goes over the mast base so it protects the tape. It doesn't leak and it is easy to remove and change something if we need to. We've used it on both our boats and love it. Just make sure you grease the edges of the hole in your deck liberally so that it doesn't stick next time you have to pull the mast. Also make sure your mast is where you want it before you use it ie: straight up and down and raked however much you want it. I used Spartite when restepping the mast on our Cal 39 Mk2 w/ good results. Keeps mast well supported w/out any noise. I did fabricate a new mast collar at the time, which provided smooth SS sleeve thru the deck and appropriate interface for mast boot. (I'll post pictures tonight if anybody is interested) Follow the instructions to ensure you can remove mast at a later time (Vasaline used as mold release). I used a cut section of truck inner-tube for a mast boot (one side attached to mast collar, the other end attached to mast) than followed on top of that w/ a fabric cover made of Sunbrella for UV protection. Well, watch out with Spartite, it is a great product, but seal inside must be perfect to not drip thru, do not get any on deck, make sure everything is covered. Probably would not do it again. Nick, right you are. you want to keep the Spartite where it belongs, and nowhere else. I used modeling clay to form a lower seal at the deck penetration. I then leak tested seal w/ water, ensuring it was not going to leak before pouring in the black gooo. I also masked and taped off the deck area around mast collar because spills happen. Jeff
