Shaefer Cal 40 Restoration

Long time now since I owned Cal 40 # 164 (1970). I still admire this group for the info sharing and thought I'd share that there is a great youtube series about a 1966 cal 40 restoration. Total, complete, soup-to-nuts, all-out inside and out top to bottom restoration. I doubt any other has had all this done to it. Interesting series of videos, still underway, with some great craftsmanship and ideas for the C40.

There are only several minor differences between my Cal 24, the original Cal, and the Cal 24 fed growth hormones, otherwise know as the Cal 40. First, the dog house is just a few inches wider, and a few inches taller. Nope, not exaggerating.. There's maybe an extra step of two to get down to the salon thru the companionway. I noticed the people in the video who otherwise look normal, are probably Lilliputians, which explains why they don't have to kneel when going below.. And it has a huge clunky diesel engine which takes up a huge amount of space. Yeah, it has a little dedicated head, instead of simply hiding same below the V berth. OK, she's got an upper deck of bunks for crew that on my boat, are not needed. And it's virtually a lot slower than a non-steroid Cal 24, because, being higher off the waves than my boat, it's significantly slower, for the same reason that a Go Kart going 25 MPH feels like you're going 70..Jerry of Cal 24 Shpritz, the non steroid taking Cal 24.

Seriously, tho...I have nothing but the greatest admiration for anyone who takes on the project of restoring one of the greatest examples of classic plastic in all history, especially one of the famous Cal 40's.Jerry of Shpritz, the Cal 24 from which the Cal 40 was modeled after, or shall I say, was used as a model for the Cal 40.

I think the differences between the cal 24 and the cal 40 are pretty
significant.
If what sailboat data shows is accurate, the cal 24 had what is closer to a
full keel vs the fin keel of the cal 40.
That is a huge change for the time. Rudders were significantly different
and deck stepped vs keel stepped masts changes many of the design
considerations.
I think it is safe to say certain things were borrowed as every yacht
designer takes from one design and applies lessons learned to another, but
is it important to recognize the ground breaking design elements that were
incorporated into the cal 40 at the time and to recognize that a 40 ft
composite sailboat is a different beast entirely when loads are considered
vs a 24ft sailboat.
It is said that George Griffith Sketched a profile view of the cal 40.
True or not I dont know.
What can be said is the cal 40 was a record breaker.

East coast cal 29 sailor.

I would tend to agree with Jim. Yes it was the same designer, and yes an argument can be made the doghouse appearance is similar in the Cal 24 and Cal 40. But, look at the keel design. I'm no naval architect, but I think there are major differences between the Cal 24 and Cal 40. Speaking of naval architects, I recall Charlie told a story that years ago, they invited Lapworth to a Cal 25 dinner in Annapolis and he accepted and attended. Charlie asked Lapworth a question I think about how he decided on the scaling for the keel for the Cal 25, Cal 28 and Cal 40. Lapworth, clearly offended, said each boat was separately designed, and not scaled versions of one another. Upon, which Charlie apologized to 'Mr. Lapworth.'
Best,

ok ok ok ....the 1st Cal 40 is a flush deck !! it was still at Tacoma YC
(2 years ago)
however ... We still think that the Cal 29 looks like a smaller Cal 40..

Re: [Cal_Boats] Shaefer Cal 40 Restoration

If you look at an overhead view of the Cal 40, showing the outline of the hull shape, rounded bow shape; it's the same as the Cal 24, and probably the same as the 36, 28, 25, 30 Mk1, etc. Looking out at the companionway from the interior of my Cal 24, it's put together in the identical way as the Cal 40. Same teak framing, clear glassed plywood, and other details. The proportions are the same, but obviously, increased in over all size. Essentially, he recycled what worked throughout the original Cal line of boats. Also, if you look at the hull shape of a Lapworth 36, you can see he simply moved the rudder from the keel, and hung something that resembles the vertical stabilizer off and F-86, and hung it off the bottom of the boat near the stern, where it would have a lot more leverage. Note that the horizontal stabilizer of an F-86 is fully rotating, as is the way the Cal boats are. That was the secret of how the F-86 could out-dive the Mig 15.
And the new rudders used to replace the old rudders on the Cal 40 look like one side of a whale's tail flippers. Mother nature had already evolved the ideal shape!Just some observations.Jerry of Shpritz, Cal 24 the original Cal.(It's design plan, dated 1958, says "California 24".)
