My 1st thought is, the PAC Cup boats will be returning middle to late July. You may look at the site and watch the weather window when they head back. 2nd thought, windows are a lot of windage for a bimini on a passage. I have done 2 Transpacs. Why would you think you need full coverage? I have been restoring my Cal-2 30 for the last two years. I live in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. The sailing here is different than on the mainland, the middle of the Pacific, big swell an high winds face me any direction I try to go. That said, I've re-rigged, standing and running, new main sail coming, and am daily working on the boat to have her ready for a sail to Maui and the other islands this June, an possible west coast journey later this year or next. Some of the items I'm still looking for, canvas products to go with my Bimini, like side windows, I have a front inclosure already. SSB radio, solar power, wind vane steering, auto pilot. Fuel and water storage. As you can guess funds have gotten low with a lot of expensive items still needed. I'd love to hear your experiences with adding these items an how to find things used or more reasonable, and ways you've conquered your needs.

I'm not surprised that it is expensive to refit. It's tough to find marine gear in Kona, and shipping from the mainland is expensive. Some eBay vendors don't ship to HI or AK. You might be able to save on shipping by having friends take gear along when they fly back. If you head for the San Francisco area, the Pacific Cup website (https://pacificcup.org/kb - about halfway down under "Getting Back") has some useful articles on heading to the mainland. The skipper of the boat that I rode on for several Pacific Cups would head north for a couple of days out of Hawaii to get north of the center of the Pacific High, and then turn east. He usually had to motor a bit before getting enough breeze to sail at a decent speed. Good luck with the restoration! I have the front already, an would like the sides for those times when it's nasty out and your on the tiller. Dry cockpit is a happy cockpit. Even at anchor it gives an outside room in the blowing rain. That's awesome you've raced the crossing, did you sail back? I don't see a reason to put the Window up front unless the cockpit is getting soaked. It's a different sail when you not racing. Here in Hawaii it rained an blew all night last evening. an I put my front up. Kept the cabin entrance dry but only half of the cockpit > On May 9, 2016, at 1:13 PM, saylorran sa… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > My 1st thought is, the PAC Cup boats will be returning middle to late July. If you have the time, go to Honolulu Yacht club and look for a guy named Jim Sullivan. He spent years outfitting his 2-30 for a trans Pacific crossing in California. He made it and hangs out there doing odd jobs. He did all those things you reference and did them on a tight budget.
