Just wanted to drop a note of thanks to one and all during this Christmas season. I've been on this list, mostly lurking and listening and enjoying the commauderie of seasoned sailors and folks who are trully into their boats. The level of eexpertise on this list is amazing. This list, the membership and the level of expertise freely shared typically with a good sense of humour was the reason that when it came time to buy me a boat, I ended up with well not one but two CAL's: a CAL-20 and a CAL-29. Must confess I wanted a 39 or 40 but could afford it. So settled for 49 feet of CAL. As it turns out, Im sitting on board the 29 in Rock Hall, way late in the season to head south and waiting out a storm with water levels at flood stage in the creek. All very cool as long as your tied to the dock..;) Several folks on this list I've had a chance to meet in person. What is always a source of amazement to me is how helpfull and sincere everyone Ive met has been with respect to helping me out with the selection of the boats, getting them ready to sail and learning more about each model. Amazing floks. The same can be said for this list. As a nubie, just want to thank everyone and hope that 2010 will be an even more interesting and eventfull year of shared experiences of the sport and vessels that we all enjoy. Best regards, and with much gratitude. Chris H svBayBreeze CAL3-29 -- /ch

Chris, Not that I have added a extreme amount to your knowledge base. As you move south this winter - spring, give me a shout as you pass by in the Neuse River. Oriental is along the ICW, our marina is just off the main river. There are some transient docks in Oriental, and if you are looking for a midler (milder than the northern Chesapeake) I can check on available slips if interested. See you in the spring? Thanks for the invitation. While greatly delayed working quickly now to leave port as soon as all the minor repairs are done, and then waite for the weather window, to scoot into Norfolk. It can be short as 3 days or as long as five denpending on the winds. Once in the ICW im not too concerned about progress or weather, but the bay is a different story. Definitely will touch based once in Oriental as its one of the places I want to check out as Ive heard its quit the maritime community. Best regards and thanks /ch

Hi Charlie; Your one of the folks I wanted to hook up with as I hear you guys are into winter racing in the area so understand the bay well. Given the time of year and the need to make miles I trust you understand if I dont swing into Annapolis as the push to Norfolk will be an effort at 50nm per day with several bailout harbour planned. Sorry to say but Annapolis at this time is on the bailout list as its just a half day run from Rock Hall. If you send me your contact info off list perhaps we can meet up for a beer as I have to drive into Annopolis to get the dink repaired at Inflatable Experts on second street. Your right. This is quite the cute place. Could easily spend the summer here. Small and traditional with just enough gentrification as to not impact the local flavour but provide the needed extras....like the cofeeshop with the big fat internet pipe that the nice gal keeps on all night.as well as allowing me to use her water supply to fill the shuttle tanks. No water at the marina but the electricity is on. No internet at dockside at this time of the year other then 1 megbyte which is slower and more intermittant then dialup used to be. However the folks at the marina have been more then good to me and for sure will be left with a nice departure gift once Im ready to go. Listened to the marine forcast this AM and it does not look good for the latter part of the week when all the chores will be done. Basically whats left to do is install the X-5 system, install the fixed mount VHF, install the GPS system and connect all three via a simple network, Replace some lights, friggen steaming light is toast so you know what that means, the engine checks out, tighten and inspect all fittings, do the final checks and sea trial, and were good to go. Once the weather is right, two days min is what I will be waiting for, then the push to Norfolk can start. Les has offered to come down for two days, so all the needed tasks will get done for sure. This is one heck of a community that continues to blow me away and one that I am grateful for. Best regards.... Chris

CH please add us to any list you are making of folks with whom to share your reports on your travels. We are planning to make the same trip, only south to north, in April. We would realy appreciate any info on your experiences in the Chesapeake, places to leave/store our boat, anchorages, places to go, people to see, things to do. We also are very interested in your experiences in the ICW from Norfolk to Beaufort since we may be doing that section if we cannot find a good weather window for a run on the outside. Any info on weather resources, anchorages, or anything else would be most appreciated. Best of luck on your trip! For those of us in the northern latitudes and fresh-water longitudes, this is the closest we get to sailing: reading and writing about it. At least, that is, until the iceboat comes out. So the latest /WoodenBoat/ magazine has a nice article on William and John Atkin, and one of my Christmas presents was William Atkin's memoir, /Of Yachts and Men/. I've read half of it and it's great. In the distant days of the first half of the 20th century, he wrote monthly design columns for /Motor Boating/ magazine and presented a new design each month(!). Lots were sailboats, despite the rag's name. He had a lot to say about design issues and about the art of sailing. His 32 foot "Eric" was based on the Norwegian lifeboats, scaled down, and was the basis for the Westsail (aka Wetsnail) 32. He favored heavy, sturdy vessels because he was oriented toward cruising and wet conditions. There's a picture in the book of him and his son John sailing on Long Island Sound in December. Now we know that there are lighter ways to go out and thrash around and get wet, which Atkin liked to do. In the summer we sometimes have "schooner weather" days when the only boat out sailing with the schooners is my Cal 20, and she does pretty well out there. Atkin's "Eric" would probably be drier. And then I came home and in the mail was the latest issue of /Good Old Boat/ magazine. In the letters section I saw a familiar vessel--my other boat, the 1961 Seafarer. I had responded to their article on the Tripp Bermuda 40, of which my boat is a miniature version. Chris Campbell

I saw that. Nice letter. The Bermuda 40 was a nice story. Henry Hinckley was considering building a fiberglass hull. A group of men approached him and asked him to quote for construction of a Tripp design they had commissioned. He decided to build a boat that already had buyers. Since he was known for wood boats, his old customers were outraged. He soothed their anger by telling them that "inside every fiberglass boat is a wood boat." Ahoy to all Cal Sailors, For those of you that can't get out the water, perhaps you may be interested in following along with the Fort Lauderdale to Key West race. It is a 160 nm coastal run that starts at 1300 hours on January 13th. I will be crewing again this year as fore deck on Sempre Amantes, a 42 foot Hunter Passage. Last year we finished third place with an elapsed time of 23:24:03. Here are some photos from last year... http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=77841&id=573217072&l=54a2ec646d According to http://keywestrace.org/index.html, this year entrants will have transponders aboard for position reporting. Happy New Year! -Michael-

I think he was preparing them for the expense of that wood interior. Gorgeous but heavy and expensive. Greetings everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend! I want to thank all the veterans in this group for serving our wonderful country, for your sacrifice in time and effort, and especially your spouses sacrifices during your tour of duty. If any of you have additional family members serving, please let them know that I appreciate their service as well! I hope everyone is getting some good sailing in and I will hopefully join in later this week! I will give an update on my progress soon! As always, please be safe! Regarding Memorial Day I don't mean to hurt any anyone's feelings, and I do want to thank Jim for thinking of the veterans, but, honestly, this a very misunderstood holiday. It's not for or about veterans, (that's done on veteran's day) and it's not for marking the beginning of Summer, and not meant as an excuse for marketing cars, toys, and appliances. It used to be called Decoration Day. It's meant to go to cemeteries and decorate the graves of young men and women who've tragically lost their lives in combat. It originated during the Civil War, and it was an informal day during which loved ones, wives, parents, sweethearts would memorialize by decorating their graves with flowers and bunting. There's a good article about the holiday in yesterday's The Guardian News Paper on line. It tells about a young man who lost his best friend during the largest helicopter assault since Vietnam, in 2009, in Afghanistan; shot in the neck by a sniper and bled to death even before his comrades could carry him, under fire, to a medevac helicopter. His battalion of Marines lost over a dozen killed, and many more wounded and maimed. He was so distraught that he returned in shock from severe PTSD, which the VA failed to treat successfully, and he committed suicide. Look it up, worth a read. His mom nearly committed suicide herself so distraught was she, but resolved to do something constructive for others in her son's situation, but her efforts were sabotaged by a politician as "costing too much". She didn't give up, and her legislation is once again before Congress. Anyway,All the best,Gerald Sobel, Shpritz, On Sunday, May 29, 2016 7:07 PM, "Kool Beans ne… [at] hotmail.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Greetings everyone! Gerry, you are correct in the historic info, but today at a large weekend cruise in with quite a few yacht clubs attending (after the Indy 500, before the ballgame) there was a ceremonial hoisting of the flag by all veterans present in honor of the lives lost, observed by all present. Some with tears. Those who served and serve should be thanked daily, this day is a jog to the collective memories that sacrifices continue to be made, for all of us. Yet I wonder how they must feel as we see many of our freedoms slipping away, including access to the shores that belong to all of the people of this country they are defending. It is particularly important to support them when they return permanently wounded. Please participate in your local activities to take them sailing if you have a chance.
