Fred, A typical way to deal, with this is to have your windlass mounted further aft on deck. A deck slapper board protects the deck from the chain, and your pipe can be vertical or nearly so. I don't know the layout of your boat and the mechanics of doing this, but there is much to recommend it. Foredeck hatches have to be planned for tho. Lacking that and open three sided "tray" would have less friction. You could try a larger size pipe and cutting it open? Lower friction HDPE might help.
