Someone needs to mention (so I will) that not all metal beams on our CAL's are "the dreaded" version.... My CAL 2-34 has a metal beam but it floats above the hull and allows water to freely pass under it, by design. The dreaded version as I understand it basically hugs the contour of the hull thereby pooling, or at least slowing down the flow of, water. For what it's worth.

Chris, will it deflect if the beam has rusted away?Jerry of Ye Olde Shpritz, oridginnal kit built Cal 24 Mk-1 On Friday, July 1, 2016 10:04 AM, "du… [at] aim.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Someone needs to mention (so I will) that not all metal beams on our CAL's are "the dreaded" version.... Never thought about the beam being completely gone. I would think there would be some fragments left that would deflect a sensitive compass??
