salon portlight replacement in cal 27 pop top
mo… [at] aol.com2016-07-06 01:28 UTC
i want to give my thanks for the guidance i got on rub rail replacement. it was a bit more difficult done on the water and by myself, i think, than it would have been on the hard with some help but, it turned out to be a job well done.
now, onto the portlights. all the glass needs replaced and two leak so that i had to use tyvek tape on the outside as a temporary fix. going to be really fun removing that tape. lol.
anyhow, i have a few questions about that job for those with experience.
1) where can i get replacement rubber seals?
2) where should sealant be applied?
3)silicone sealant, butyl tape (which i really love for bedding of hardware), or some other type of sealant.
4) how do they come apart? is there an outside trim ring that screws to the inside halves or how does that work?
5) i need to replace some of the crews (at least) it's aluminum. normally i would think stainless but, not so much with aluminum. what material should replacement screws be made of?
thanks,
vince

on further examination, i see how they are put together. i can figure out where to put sealant based on what is there when i pull them apart. however, i still don't know where to find the gasket material, though. does anyone have experience with this?

I’ve a Cal 2-29 but I just used some round stuff out of my ‘plastics material bin’, not only sealing the closure, but bending the old gasket back into place… it will most likely run black streaks down the boat and I’ll have to redo it, which is fine. I want to reduce weight with new ones at some point anyway. Best of luck

word to the wise. If you are going to use silicone, only use Marine silicone, the Home Depot stuff works but there are some extra oils or something that leave a mess on the hull. Make sure you clean up the film from the "over-smear" thoroughly and immediately.

Vince,
Quite a while ago I bought sponge rubber o-ring material for my opening
ports from Hoffmeyer, but they don't seem to carry it anymore.
Here is a site I found that carries closed cell sponge in various sizes.
http://www.standard-gasket.com/o-rings/prices/oring-cord-prices.htm
I've also ordered gasket material from Bomar for both hatches and
opening ports.
https://www.pompanette.com/BigSummit/pomp.nsf/Subsites/bomar.
Their size may be close enough.
Good luck,
Duane

i want to go with the stock set up. if not that, i would cut the holes bigger and install opening ports.

yeah. that i do know. marine products for boats. i am actually reluctant to use silicone unless it's what i should use. i prefer butyl tape. i was going to use tape to mask off the area around the ports and then, clean up is easy.
