Cal 33-2 opening port replacement
NEWMAN2016-07-11 17:57 UTC
Wondering if anyone knows the brand of the opening ports in a 1986 Cal
33-2. Or what will fit as a replacement. There are four in the cabin and
one in the hull on starboard side. The starboard side hull opening port has
been damaged. Not bad, but the exterior lip got cracked. It is very brittle
and can't take much of a bump from anything (even a cleaning brush). I am
thinking of replacing that opening port and maybe just do them all.
I found this Beckson model and it appears very similar to what is currently
on the boat.

I took measurements last Friday while down at the boat finishing some teak,
but of course now can't find the paper. I think I need to order a 5" x 12"
opening size.
Does anyone have measurements of the opening ports and a good source for
replacements?
Should I go back with plastic ports or metal? Seems the plastic has lasted
30 years.
Thanks,
Leslie

I replaced our ports years ago. Purchased from pompanette.com the gray series ports.
I had to trim for the rain drain in the new series but otherwise a exact replacement. The exterior "spigot length" can be trimmed so it doesn't extend too far from the hull or cabin sides. Trimming also helps when re-caulking as needed. I used a rotozip with a 90 degree cutter head to get about a 1/2" from the hull.

Until three months ago, I had an ’86 33-2. The opening ports on mine were plastic Beckson Newport 512 ports. Over the years, I replaced all of them. Can be ordered directly from Beckson or through marine supply houses.

The frames are plastic. I have procured many for Cal 25s in Annapolis, and am pleased with the results.

I replaced my Beckson 512s with New Found Metals Tri-Matrix ports. They are attractive, real sturdy, relatively easy to install (videos on their website) and the price is about the same.

For the installation of window glass (or lexan or whatever), I finally found some spline at an RV parts place. For the overall install, I think the butyl rubber would work, but have not tried that. There would be several applications of goo involved. I can send some detail on how I did it if anyone is interested. The butyl may not solve everything because I believe it needs compression to work well.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 33-2 opening port replacement
NEWMAN2016-07-12 12:21 UTC
Thanks all. All of mine are exactly like the opening ports pictured on this
Bomar site. Have the exact same knobs to open them. The hinge and glass are
identical.
https://www.pompanette.com/BigSummit/pomp.nsf/0/2648B1279F709117852578170048142D?Open
So I guess mine are Bomar.
I found the Beckson 'Rain Drain' model 5 1/2" x 12 1/2" on Walmart's
website for $121 each, which is a real deal it seems. But I already like
the Bomar so might just order that model. Defender has the Bomar port for
$147. Little more for the Bomar than the Beckson, but I am thinking I'll go
back with what was there.
I did find my paper with measurements. Opening Port size is ~ 5" x 12"
inside. ~ 15" x 8" outside measure. The rim around the port measured ~ 1
3/16". All these measurements were taken of the port while it is still
installed, so guessing the hole opening in the boat must be at least 5 1/2"
x 12 1/2" or so. All these numbers seem to line up with the
Bomar G512-AD27.
I do appreciated the feedback from folks.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 33-2 opening port replacement
Edward Stancil2016-07-12 17:11 UTC
our original ports were replaced by PO..we have one left (non opening
aluminum with glass) they we replaced with beckson plastic
..We decided to go with Lewmar opening ports on our 36 ...we ran adds on
craigslist across the lower 48 ...we found within 5 months
6 ports size "O"....however the size we need was size "1"...So we searched
again found 6 used Lewmar 3 different pairs
1 new old stock (main salon) clear, 1pair green tint black knobs
(bathroom), and 1pair blue tint black knobs (v berth)...
i would not use plastic ..crew drags feet across the cabin cracking plastic
rims causing leaks and dogs break out of frame
making hard to lock down....plus they seem to yellow out earlier and
plastic becomes brittle ..which leads to cracking
....we looked at New Found metals ports that seemed clunky and did not
match our aluminum main fixed Cal cabin ports...
(plus $$$)....Also we have no liner inside so ports bond to fiberglass on
both sides..
I would recommend that 1st take out all ports and make template of each
hole in cabin top...befor you order ...
This up grade probably was the MOST visually satisfying of all the up
grades...one tool that helped the most was
a drum sander with round sanding drum (3") power by drill... make sure
that the that the center line is centered
or they will look light steps in a light house...edward
