...still at it. Yes, my lovely 2-25, Resa, is still afloat but she's not been under sail in some time. You know, i guess there are no good diesel mechanics in my area. "Oh. You touched it? We dont want to work on it then" Ok..fine. So, to the group. Anyone have experience with the injection pump or this engine and will talk with me on a phone call? New valves and head work Lash set to .008 All new gaskets New injector New exhaust elbow New Racor New engine filter Bled fuel and it gets fuel to the injector Makes compression. I can hardly crank it when the release is closed. Spraying propane, wd or ether..pick your choice..into intake doesnt light it off. Yes, Joe. I've tried all three. (Ducking as you throw a wrench at me) What am i missing...besides a running engine? Thanks. I'm in Monterey, CA. I bought her last October to learn to sail. Got out a few times and now i'm learning the equally important diesel mechanics. ...tom

Have you talked with a shop that does rebuilding/refurbishment of injection pumps and injectors? Perhaps the guys that you bought the injector from? (note: I am no diesel expert, but if I had done all you had done on that motor I would have sent the injection pump out for inspection and refurbishment. In the Bellingham WA area there is Northland Diesel Service. ) Clean airway and filter? And for a 25, I would consider an outboard ... Let us know if you decide to sell your YSM ... :-) cheers, peter To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2016 18:59:13 -0700 Subject: [Cal_Boats] Yanmar ysm8... ...still at it. Wow you have done a lot to that engine. Just a few notes about what I experienced in case they help. Mine cranked over an would not start after replacing filters and rebuilding injectors. Remember that diesels have to warm the cylinder before it's going to fire. Charge your battery's up all the way. I thought mine were good but when I charged them I got it to fire. I also found the new Racor filter I put on was too fine a filter. It clogged. The Racor is supposed to be the first filter and a larger micron than the one on the engine. I had crap growing in my tank that kept clogging filters. I had to remove my fuel and clean my tank also. Once I'd cleaned the fuel, replaced the filters a second time, bled everything, charged my battery's I got her to fire! Diesels start from heat of compression. A nice and tight (good compression) diesel will start very quickly on a warm day provided it has fuel injected and air. To me is sounds like maybe your engine is not in time. Did you remove the injector pump ever? I have never had to go into my Yanmar, but I have done some major work on my antique Caterpillar bull dozers. They are very old slow turn diesel engines with no glow plugs and injector pumps for each cylinder. Very rare the injector pumps fail. My machine is over 60 years old and starts and runs fine. All I do is keep the fuel system clean. Before doing much more brute force to your engine with ether and such. triple check the timing for everything. Hopefully you have not dorked around with the injector pump timing in any way, if that can be screwed up on a Yanmar. I don't have my service manual here, it's on my boat. I know my old Cats have to have their rack and injector pumps timed if you screw with them. Once I had an old Cat that I was not sure the nozzle was spraying correctly. I actually took the nozzle out of the head and spun the injector line around so I could connect the nozzle and have it spray off to the side into a bucket. Then turned over the engine and verified that I was truly getting a good spray of atomized fuel. Your engine needs to have the valves open at the correct time. Intake opens, air comes in. And while the piston is coming up the injector needs to squirt and the valves are closed when piston is in the firing position. If you have all that correct and good compression the engine should fire. Also, don't have the fresh water intake open when you are cranking alot. You could get some water into the cylinders and water will not compress. You will bend a rod. I know of someone with an old Cat that had a head gasket leaking water into the cylinder and he bent a rod. If it is having trouble turning over, that does not sound right. Makes me wonder if you have it flooded in some way or something. You force it to turn over with liquid in the cylinder and you are going to damage your engine.
