Not only best of luck, but also a tip o' the cap in appreciation for your
service. No race committee, no race. I hope that you don't get to pay for a
single drink at the post-race party.

Good wind makes a good RC. You'd be amazed at what you get blamed for (or
maybe not amazed). Best of luck.
I am presently putting on the Cal 25 National Championships in Annapolis.
My spleen has been in an uproar for the last several days due to Hermine.
You never know what is going to happen.

Just got home, 8pm,everything was fine; we had 2 certified PROs as part of the team, I assigned one to get the boat to the right spot, about 3 miles off shore. We set the finish mark and he guided the captain to get the right distance and we dropped anchor. Actually I thought it was a little long, but not worth the hassle of resetting the boat. Had a couple of bang bang finishes, but most were spaced out. 70 boats, 55 miles. That spreads them out. Got another tomorrow, 32 miles Michigan City to Chicago. Probably fewer than 30 boats this time. I am just calling time tomorrow. We have the post races party tomorrow, and yes, I won't have to buy a drink. The 2 PROs were from Chicago YC and Columbia YC, the two biggest Clubs in Chicago. We all help each other run racing, we also help with their races. It works. That way a small club like mine can play with, and have the respect of the big boys. Committee boat is a Hatteras, I think, 42. 1960's vintage, so it's bare bones, but can really move. Was re-powered 5 or so years ago. Owner is a lawyer, past commodore of my club. He never bills us for the gas!David Dobbs CAL29 411

Cal 25 Nationals - Good heaven Charlie, it was only 45 years ago I won the Cal 25 Nationals.
Time flies when you are having fun.
I served on many race committees over the years, 1984 Olympics and 1995 Pre-Olympics, many Long Beach Yacht Club races, even a few I organized. Bobbie and I were both PRO certified in the olden days. It was fun, but tiring. In one LBYC race from Long Beach, CA to Cabo San Lucas, BCS Mexico, I was on the finish line and went to sleep standing or so it was said.
If you race, you should do your "Paybacks" and serve on the RC.

Glad it went well, I have been a PRO for numerous races, out here on the left coast. We finally have a use for a powerboat... a committee boat (har har). Our biggest challenge usually is getting an anchor down in 100 feet of water. I have had 500 feet of rode on a inflatable upwind mark at times. Class racing can be a challenge, as the boats are so close, we have actually had photo finishes (cel phone video determined the winner).

Brian,That's another advantage we Great Lakers have, depth! I'm setting a mark in 30-40 feet of water. The south end of Lake Michigan is very shallow, by WC standards. It goes to over 900 feet just about a mile off the Michigan shore. The bad part is we get Nor-Easters that generate huge waves of short duration. So it's good and bad, like everything else in life.
