Source for Wooden Spreaders
sa… [at] mascom.com2016-09-12 23:37 UTC
I had the tip of a spreader let go yesterday and need to locate a source for replacement. My options include aluminum http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/aluminum.html, but I'd prefer the have duplicates of my existing Spruce spreaders so I can use my existing mast http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/mast.html attachments.
Since I can't get the mast http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/mast.html down for about a week, I'd prefer to order a pair from someone who has measurements for my boat.
It is a 1965 Cal http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/cal.html 30.
Anyone know of a supplier?

Greg,
Several years ago I busted one, and found replacement Sitka price becalming around to local specialty lumber suppliers and boatyards. Mr Google can certainly help. You can certainly fabricate the spreaders by yourself. Paint the tops white to reduce sun damage, and varnish the bottoms. Yo’ll love the results.

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } I never found a source for a 2-27. I ordered spruce and made my own. Pretty easy but a little time consuming. I didn't have a good template. At least you have one to use as a template.

My other boat has spruce spreaders so I'm curious about what was the
failure mode. Was it a rot problem, or some sort of compression
failure, or what?
I had an incipient failure at the spreader base where the original
owners had done a really cheesy repair job, apparently using polyester
resin and fiberglass and tongue depressors (!!). I will say that it
lasted 40 years but by then there was only dust remaining. I worked in
a new piece of spruce at the base, where the load is mostly compression,
using an elongated tongue-and-groove joint secured by epoxy. It has
served without problem for a decade now, and unlike the previous repair
it's visible so I should be able to see if something starts to fail.
By the way, somebody else suggested white paint on top, varnish on the
bottom. I adopted that practice some time ago and it's ideal. You see
the varnish from the bottom, and the sun sees a reflective white surface
on top.

Spar craft...has what you need
Aviation supply
We thought that we could
Save time by getting another s
Cal 36 spreader so we could
Make temporary s
So we can make exact Original
Size spreaders
Now we have 3 or 4 set of
Spreaders 2 sets that are too short
And one set that we sanded too
Thin..
This two week project has turn
Into a forever spearers project
Good luck...Edward Cal 36

Aircraft Spruce came through for me. The sent the stock (clear spruce) and I fabricated the spreaders. They turned out great. I vanished them with UV additive (many coats) and they've been very durable.
