Cal 39 Mk II Sailing characteristics
John Denman2016-09-19 12:47 UTC
Hello everyone, My wife Diane and I are looking to upgrade from our Current 1971 Bristol 34' to a more modern hull and faster more comfortable boat. We are seriously interested in a Cal 39 and want to know more about how she sails.
The Bristol is rather tender and we find ourselves reefing or sailing under genoa alone in anything over 12 knots or so. We usually vacation down South of Cape Cod and anytime we have to go downwind in the typical 20kt southwesterlies its a rail to rail rollfest and just a white knuckle ride with no surfing.
We are hoping the next boat points higher, heels a bit less and might actually surf rather than wallow around in a following sea. Can anyone help us to better understand how the 39' sails and what we should expect.
Thanks for any help.

John,
We have a 1978 Cal 39 and it does, pretty much everything you are looking for. The rudder is large and responsive, and the balance is fantastic sailing upwind. We can carry our 120 genoa and un-reefed main in pretty much anything up to 20 knots and it is still a joy to sail (we are in the San Francisco bay). We had a Catalina 27 before this and had the same issues you have with your Bristol. It was a nightmare downwind in anything more than 12 knots.

Hi John,
I own a 1979 Cal 39 mkii named Old Jack Rose. We raced last weekend in the Boston Light Race (PHRF pursuit race) and won the cruising division. The wind was 10-20knots, the course 14 miles, and you can see how we did compared to a variety of other boats, including those in the spinnaker division (link copied below). I keep the boat in Winthrop, MA contact me directly if you'd like to talk more.
