Our 1978 Cal 39 had (we sold Bribon...) the shoal draft keel and a used 120 genoa not matched to the boat. It had a solid, massive feel underway but was next to useless upwind, good on a beam reach or run. Location, Puerto Rico. Conditions typically 15-20 kt of wind and 5-6ft waves. Unfortunately for us, we were always headed upwind to get the 25 miles to Culebra from Fajardo and a further 20 to St. Thomas. The couple who bought Bribon also bought new sails and love the boat. My best advice: sail the boat as much as you can prior to purchase! Peter "It's not just the cars, it's the people!" (Porsche Club of America))

Thanks Peter, so do you think the upwind issue was the sails? Or did the boat slip sideways too much? Everything I have heard and read seems to suggest the boats sail at a very high angle and do well upwind but it also seems most people have been sailing the deep draft boat. Our Cal 39 with the in between draft of 6' will point with just about anything. We race against J-29's every week and they don't out point us. We have a Kevlar 155 which certainly helps FWIW.
