The Good Old Boat Regatta - October 7-8 in Annapolis

Hi, All. Given that almost all (if not all) of our Cals are more than 30 years old, I thought that of our group membership that is within shouting range of the Chesapeake Bay and Annapolis might get a kick out of participating in this event. More info on the 17th Good Old Boat Regatta in Annapolis: The Annapolis Good Old Boat Regatta Dates: October 7-8, 2016 Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen. I am Charlie Husar with the Annapolis Good Old Boat Regatta, an annual sailing event for boats of "some maturity". I know that many of you have participated in the past. If you are interested in sailing and partying this year, contact information is below. The only requirements for entry are that you have a sailboat and that the first hull of your boat's model was built at least 30 years ago. This will be the 17th annual Good Old Boat Regatta (affectionately known as the GOBR). The event is put on by the Shearwater Sailing Club (SSC). The GOBR is a totally a not-for-profit event for the enjoyment of our sailors. For those who may be unfamiliar, the GOBR is as much a celebration of our classic fiberglass and wood boats as it is a race. We invite first time racers as well as those with more experience. No club or sailing group affiliations are required to participate. For more information on the race and social events, go to http://shearwatersc.net or contact Charlie Husar at hu… [at] gmail.com <mailto:hu… [at] gmail.com> 410-266-6216 The Saturday race (approximately 3 to 4 hours in duration) will be run using Government navigation marks south of the Bay Bridge in the Chesapeake Bay. The Friday skippers' meeting will include check-in, and a basic racing tutorial for "newbies". Both handicap and one design races will be run. The fin keel and full keel boats will compete separately. If 3 or more of the same boat type are registered, the GOBR will give you separate one design scoring and awards. Chesapeake By Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) sanction is available for CBYRA Cruising One Design fleets. Dates are Friday October 7, and Saturday October 8, 2016. Make sure you put a note on your refrigerator door. The skippers' meeting is on Friday October 7 in the evening for about an hour and a half, and the race and party are on Saturday October 8. We will continue to use Bay Ridge Marina as the home of the Annapolis Good Old Boat Regatta. The Bay Ridge Marina is on Lake Ogleton just outside of Annapolis. See the maps on the Shearwater Sailing Club web site. We have anchorage for overnighters, a place to bring in dinghies, plenty of parking for drive-ins, a party room at the marina, and other stuff. We will have the Friday skippers' meeting and the Saturday party at Bay Ridge. Lake Ogleton is on the Severn River just before the Severn meets the Chesapeake Bay. It is less than a half hour by boat from the Annapolis Harbor and from the GOBR starting line. The Marina is also less than 5 miles by road from downtown Annapolis. As always, there will be no charge for food and drink at the GOBR social events. Yes!! FREE food and drink. You can combine the Good Old Boat Regatta with a visit to the Annapolis Boat Show which occurs over the same extended weekend.

Charlie, I made one with you about ten years ago. I’m afraid my sailing days are over. All the best. Cal 20 #1220, the lovely /Martha C/, came out of the water last week. Good planning, actually, because it looks like rain 4 out of 5 days this week, and I'm finally wearing long pants instead of shorts to work (there are advantages to living in a vacation community). My other boat, the 1961 Seafarer, comes out on Monday after her 49th season in my care. This winter her 55 year old steel centerboard gets replaced by bronze. I'm tired of chipping rust and priming. The centerboard may be worth more than the boat, since bronze plate seems to be priced close to gold these days. My theory is that if you have an old boat that's one of the survivors of her kind, you have some sort of responsibility to maintain and protect. The Seafarer (a 26 foot Polaris model) has lots of pretty mahogany trim and varnished spruce spars. She gets lots of "nice boat" hollers from sailors and power boaters alike now. My Cal 20 is starting to get acknowledgments too. Some day there will be new owners for both, and the goal is to attract the interest of somebody who will appreciate a good old boat when that time comes. Meanwhile, it's always pleasant to have a handsome vessel that looks good and sails well. Chris Campbell
