Cal 34-III Ballast

Hello, I'm a new owner of a 1978 Cal 34-III, and am trying to get as much information about my boat as possible! I've seen conflicting reports that the Cal 34-IIIs were made with more ballast than the 34-2 and 34 - sailboatdata says the Mk. IIIs have 4650 lbs of ballast as opposed to the 34 and 34-2's 3750 lbs. This doesn't make any sense to me, as sailboatdata also lists the Mk. III's total displacement as 10200, and the 34-2 and 34's as 9500. In other words, the alleged ballast increase is more than the total weight increase of the boat, which can't be right, considering the other improvements in the Mk. III (e.g. thickened hull layup, bridgedeck, larger tanks). Can anyone confirm these numbers or provide any insight? I'd also love to get any other helpful information about my new boat. Thanks, Ben Robbins Cal 34-III S/V Serafina Seattle, WA

Ben: Welcome to the world of Cal 34’s. My Cal34, Soufflé, was built in 1969. She is a great boat. We sail her out of Portland’s Rose City Yacht Club, on the Columbia River, and occasionally sail the Oregon Offshore race from Astoria to Victoria. I cannot speak to the differences in ballast and displacement, but would be happy to compare notes. P. I am the owner of a 1976 Cal 2-34. Looking at "cal 34-III Specs" {do a google search with those exact words} I found, The Cal 2-34 and Cal 34-III share the same hull but, higher aspect rigging. It goes on to say it is dubbed as "more of a Blue Water cruiser" { III}. It has an added bridgedeck, companion way offset to starboard with added wood trim. fuel and water tank capacity was further increased. Heavier gauge standing rigging, wheel steering is also standard. You are correct on the ballast as far as I have found. If you would like to compare pics, my facebook accounts has a ton of pictures and if you message me, I have more in my computer. pm… [at] hotmail.com I had the Westerbeke 4-91 also. I am replacing it as we speak (in the process). Love my boat, she takes a good wind. I have had her just over a year. you can easily dump more money into her than her assumed value but, she is a classy and solid boat. I am thinking the difference in displacement and ballast would be related to hull thickness but, I really am not sure. I know for a fact that my hull is over an inch thick and in some places (bottom) over an inch and a half. Thanks to all for replying! It's great to know there's a community of Cal 34 owners out there to exchange information with. Things are pretty busy with work at the moment, but I'm currently living aboard and trying to prepare Serafina for a Hawaii crossing in approx. two years. So I'm sure I'll be making use of your knowledge in the future! Cheers, Ben

Hawaii is for me a someday. right now I am just looking to get somewhere warm.
