Cal 33-1

Any members have input on the Cal 33-1, designed by Bill Lapworth and produced in the early 70's?Or have experience sailing on one or against one?It looks like a real speed machine, with a PHRF of around 150 or less.Comments? Thanks,
Jerry or Shpritz

Jerry,
A dock neighbor of mine had one (Teaser II) with a taller mast that he kicked butt all over town with. He is an excellent sailor, which not doubt had something to do with it.The boat was very well equipped to race, and I have no idea how much of that was standard, or how much was retro-fitted.
Happy Holidays,

Raced on one for years. We won every race we entered. Now own a 33-2. not nearly the same boat as it pertains to speed but still a great boat and we win our fair share of races. The 33-1 was stripped out. The 33-2 is beautiful below and has heat and a/c. Pleases my wife when we cruise on the boat. PHRF of the 33-1 was 159. PHRF of the 33-2 156. Go figure.

On a haulout in Berkeley a few years back, a neighbor boat was a cal 31 that someone had attached some odd sugar scoop transom to, and then had the hull painted blue. It had some funny port/vents in the forward part of the hull that needed attention, possibly they allowed water intrusion. The boat was put up for sale later on, somewhere in sf bay. I don't think the owner was happy with the overall boat. Helen

Own a 1986 33-2 that is billed as slower than a 33-1, yet we have won a
race or two, placed second about every other race entered. So the boat must
be fast. Ours does exceptional in light wind and handles the heavy stuff
really well. In one race this year the start was crazy light wind and we
were passing other boats that appeared to be sitting still in the water.
Was rather fun.
