Monterey 2-25 Yanmar transplant

Hello all, Merry Christmas. I want to share. My replacement ysm8 showed up to the yard Thursday. Basic imspection...looks good..clean, complete, as advertised by seller. Rain..all day on Friday. Sat...uncrate and inspect..looks good. Intake valve was clean..exhaust, while sooty, was also fine. The oil, while in need of a change, was full. That is a sign to me that the crank didnt sit unbathed. I spent time cleaning it in the crate, on the deck, checked valve lash and listing the bits i want to replace..water lines, fuel lines, etc. Replaced the main fuel filter, conmected to some fresh fuel and bled..and bled..and bled. Release the compression..crank...crank...pop..pop..pop! Repeat...it lives! Shut it off and went home for the night. Merry Christmas morning....connected to water...cranked and it fired up..and ran nicely. More cleaning...then down to the slip to unbolt the original from the rails. Tomorrow, change the oils and go for another motorcycle ride. Tuesday i'll get a tow around to the crane lane and do the swap! We'll set it on the stringers, Tow back to the slip and complete the connections..battery, fuel, electricals, etc. Not as exciting as Ed lining up to pass through the canal, but i'm elated! ...tom > On Dec 25, 2016, at 6:27 PM, Martin Cownden ma… [at] shaw.ca [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > Hello, > > Does anyone out there have knowledge or experience on the Cal 3-30. It seems there is very little information out there on them.I have checked the obvious like steel mast support beam which has been replaced, motor rebuilt, etc.....just seems like a real god boat but with very few for sale to compare with. > > I live in the Pacific North West and have have owned Cal 20 for past 10 years. Its been terrific for me, I usually sail alone. In warmer months we will spend evenings having dinner aboard and then go home for the night. Increasingly the thought is wouldn't it be nice to stay overnight somewhere and continue to enjoy the time on the water. So of course we need some of the creature comforts head, galley, heat, etc. I have had my eye on this Cal 3- 30 for a while. > > Any thoughts or owners of the same boat? > > Martin > > > From: "cal boats" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> > To: "cal boats" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com>, md… [at] yahoo.com > Sent: Saturday, December 24, 2016 8:03:45 PM > Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Someone near me is sellling a cal 29 mast on craiglist > > > > > Mast - used > > > > Mast - used > Hello, I have several Sailboat mast for sale, all alum., Questions cash only, no texting (1) mast with rigging a... > > > > From: "Michael D md… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> > To: "Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> > Sent: Saturday, December 24, 2016 8:22 PM > Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Merry Christmas All ! > > > Actually, it was 83F this afternoon here in South Florida. > > Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android > > > Tom, when I was living in Pen-she-kola, going thru Naval Aviator training, the winter was...brrrr!...lots lots colder. > 75 degrees? Tom it looks like you will have it in and aligned by new years.Ed is killing time rowing back and forth waiting for the next crew and Nick to transit canal after new year. It was nice to have sunshine today. Hope the motor goes in smoothly. Status... Soon..soon. Monday was a short one. There was nobody in the yard to use the hoist to swap engines so i warmed up the new one in its crate, changed fluids and went for a long hike in the local hills. Today though... out with the old and in with the new. I have some spare parts now also, after stripping the old block. Anybody want a used salty Yanmar YSM8 single-cyl long-block? Probably just needs rings, but i dont need it. Tomorrow, alignment and final wiring and plumbing. Youtube and books are teaching me about engine-shaft alignment. Looks like Thursday, weather permitting, will be "the day". We are looking at rain on Friday, so, make hay whle the sun is shining. I may be on the water before the New Year. I'm learning a ton along the way. Eventually i'll learn to sail also. ....tom

Tom,Learning to sail is a good idea. I was down at the Fairwind Sailing Club, which owns a number of shared boats from Capri 22's to Catalina 320. They were about to shell out $95,000 for another late model 320 Catalina and I said why, when there's so many boats on the market that are practically being given away. One member said, "'Cause we want the best, and a late model boat has less maintenance problems". I asked another if he had ever heard about "angle of attack", and he said no. And I asked, why don't the boats have tell-tales on the sails. And he said, we teach the ASA method of sailing. Everyone must be checked out according to ASA; it's unimportant that one knows how to make the boat go fast. And now I know why when they attempt to sail away from the dock, they slip sideways and strike the sterns of the boats on the other side of the fairway, leaving deep gashes in the gel coat where the skegs of the out board do a nice job of carving them.Jerry of Shpritz.
